Default Potential New Owner

Hey,

New to the forum, and am looking to buy a H2 Hummer [2006] or any H2 Hummer SUT.

I got some questions as it will literally be the oldest vehicle I've ever owned..

What should I look for issue wise when purchasing?

the specific one I am looking at is a Black 06 SUT, 1" Lift with 38s, Black interior. 220,000km. [its american so like 120,000 or something miles]
It was recently inspected and passed [april 15th] and recently had the transmission rebuilt [2 weeks ago] along with some parts of the transfer case replaced and the brake pads, and some discs.

What should i ask the seller, or look for problem wise? [He is currently 3.5 hours away, but if its really necessary I might ask to drive up and see it and inspect it]

This hummer is 1 of a couple new rides i have on my list that I'm looking at, and am really liking the idea of it. However, with it being so old has me nervous. The dealer I am going through was also nervous about things like the trans, and airbags.

Any ideas, suggestions are welcome...Dont want to spend 18-19k [what he is asking] on a vehicle (sell my 2011 car) and buy this and have it breaking all the time... will also be buying an 01 Monte Carlo to add to the side so i don't have to throw money down the drain gas wise..

Also, Insurance...What do people pay? [i got 2 speeding tickets, however don't know if my insurance company counts them]

Well for reference, i've had me 03' H2 for a year now. Bought it for $12K at 140K, now its at 168K. I have yet to touch anything (besides breaks and oils, etc...) I drove 3 hours away to go look at it knowing I might not take it home. Your better off taking the ride to see it up-close. Look for water damage under the drivers side carpet. (The markers sometime leak and let water in.) I would also look underneath it for major rust issues. As far as insurance goes... I'm 22 , male with no speeding tickets (crazy right!! ) and I pay about $170.00 a month for full coverage. Good Luck!!

Okay, I pay about 90$ a month now on a Challenger with full coverage, but i don't think id get full coverage on the hummer, it would be a weekend warrior so of thing.

It is an american SUT that came from florida 3 years ago, and since then never off roaded and what not. I may just take a spin up there and take a look at it, or have him take it to a dealer up there for a close inspection again.

Any more ideas?

I just purchased my '03 H2 with 129k miles almost 2 months ago and still runs like new.

Take it for a test drive and if you really want it, don't forget to run a carfax before you buy it. You don't want to get a truck with a salvage title because that will just be headache after another.

Once you get the H2 you want, you won't regret it! Remember: HUMMER like nothing else ak47dennis was right, '06 is not old

Check the back quarter panels at the bottom where it curves over the bumper and along the bottom length of the tailgate, they rust there and around the gas cap.

Make sure the mirrors work, fold, move through full range of motion and heat. And aren't sloppy and hold their position. They are prone to failure, the 06's are better than the earlier years. But they are expensive.

Are the tires in really good shape? Even at the stock 35's they are expensive.

Check the interior panels for cracks around the door handles and map boxes.

The rear license plate tray are prone to ripping out, not cheap either.

I think you could knock the price down on that 2-3000. They aren't hot sellers right now especially with the gas prices. The lift and 38's actually hurts the selling price and makes it harder to sell.

Also check and see if the rear airbags are still there or if they have had the spring conversion done.

There are a ton for sale and cheap. That truck can be had for 15-16k. Don't worry it's probably not going anywhere fast. Take your time there's all kinds of good ones out there. Be patient and find a mint one. Good luck.

^agreed.

Dealers love to spike the prices up for vehicles that have modifications. However when you trade your vehicle in they don't give you a penny more for your mods. Hence why most people demod their vehicles before trading them in. Don't let them jack you around and jump up the sale price because it has a small lift and bigger tires. If anything that decreases the value since it's had major work done to it.

Yeah I know 06 Isn't old, but my oldest vehicle is literally '11 so yeah. lol
I have a speciality dealer looking for some, I might pass on the one i was looking at. The trans just failed and he just rebuilt it last week.
Suppose ill keep looking, but it mostly comes down to if I can get 19-20k for my current car. (I am privately selling it.)

Im picky about cars/trucks, I want the black interior, and a dark colour lol

Like i said, gunna keep looking.

Thanks for the advice and input folks, anymore feel free to chip in! I might not respond right away but i check it often lol

I bought a 06 H2 about 3 weeks ago and love it I bought it on a sunny day and the first rain we had it started leaking water off the oh crap handles on the front window pillars I took it to the dealership and found out under the four corner roof lights there is a drain hole underneath each of them that allows excess water to drain out of the roof tracks. Well come to find out all four of mine were completely blocked so they just blew them out not to exceed 35 psi by the way or you will blow the seals. It only cost me 61 dollars wow right dealership and everything. So for those of you that are getting water in your vehicle these are most likely what is causing the problem.
Check every single thing to make sure it works including the seat warmers because you can have them fix it before you buy it.
You should try auto trader thats where I found mine had to drive 2 hours away to look at it but it was perfect only had 70000 mi and paid 23000 dollars for it I would have even paid to have it shipped from another state if i had to just to get what I wanted. anyway thats my 2 cents worth.
