Overheating while towing
 

Question guys………..

I went to the Hi Desert in So. Cal. this past weekend. I towed my 6’ X 8’ trailer with 2 quads. Trailer has to weight I would say maybe 600lbs and each bike about 450lbs. So with supplies and stuff I figured the total weight to be around 1700lbs. The temp. Sunday was 90F.

I have the 07 H3 with automatic transmission. While driving, I noticed that engine temperature was 1 line before it hit the Red line when it usually runs in the middle of the gauge. I think it would had reached the Red if I did not easy up on the gas peddle and drive 50 mph instead of the 70 I was doing.

Has anyone else has issues with running hot while towing what I would call a light load.?

What can I do to help the engine run cooler, maybe a transmission cooler? Does the dealer have an option for that?

check your rad for bugs probably getting plugged up........pressure wash it from the back side.

I'm not sure..but that don't sound right...Maybe you you can get the dealer to change out your Thermostat for a cooler one..I've heard of places around the country that have different temp thermostats for the general climate they're operated in....

Do a search for a product called Purple Ice. I have not tried it yet. But have two friends
that swear by it.

That stuff is like Red line Water wetter...I'd first have the coolant system checked out for restrictions first and then add either one of these products..

I agree, I've used the Water Wetter in my Camaro and it lowered the temp about 10º-20º (F)

Tow a trailer that weighs nothing less then 2000 lbs and have no problems with temp...I'd have the cooling system checked out...:eek:

Ok thanks guys, i'm going to have the system checked out. I know the radiator isn't cloged since it only has 600 miles and we got it with 11 miles. We haven't been any place where the radiator could have gotten clogged.

Hey Little Monster, do you have the automatic trans? How hot is the temp. outside when you tow over 2000lbs?

Has anyone heard of a trans cooler for the H3? How good are they?

I am regularly towing my horse trailer, whith 2 horses the weight is +/- 4500lbs.
never a problem on the flat driving 55/75 depending on the road.
The engine starts to overheat as soon as the road becomes hilly.
In that case I just reduce my speed down to 40/45mph and, until now, everything is going back to normal.

Pressure washers can bend the radiator fins. If you think you are overheating now ...
