Off roading supplies?

My wife and I are getting our new H3 tomorrow and I have a few questions for the experienced off-roaders on the forum:
-What kind of 12 volt air inflater is avbailable to take off road? I have one in the garage that can blow up beach balls and the like, but it seems a tad wimpy for inflating tires following a session off road.
-How much air is generally let out of the tires go on the beach?
-Here on Long Island, NY we are required to also have a fire extinguisher in an off-road vehicle. Is there any particular kind everyone uses?
-We also need rope. Anything special in that regard?
-The salesman at the dealership was talking about off road places upstate and in the Poconos. Are those the best places around here?
-Are there any good websites for the off road newbee?
Thanks so much for any help. We can't wait to drive on the beach!!! YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

viair makes a good 12 volt compressor, or go bigger with a co2 tank that's good for 4 to 5 refills on 33" tires
tires should be around 18 - 20 psi for sand
go to a good 4wd shop and get a fire extinguisher there - or go cheap and go to the auto section at walmart - same extinguisher
DO NOT TAKE ROPE unless you're going to be tying each other up (and you'll have to share pics of your girlfriend/wife if that happens)- it's useless for recoveries - get a good tow strap and a few clevis shackles
get a good flashlight so others can see you if it's dark and you're trying to get some help
get a cb too - good as a last ditch call out method

check out your local 4wd shop for places to go, but don't tell them you've got a hummer, they'll screw you over if they can.

oh yeah, the most important thing - DON'T GO ALONE IF YOU'RE GOING SOME PLACE YOU'VE NEVER BEEN BEFORE OR IF YOU'RE NEW TO OFF ROADING. there's nothing more stupid than trying something for the first time that is way out of your league.

if you think it's too hard, it most likely is. get some experience then go back and try again.

good luck

Great advice from Shortbus - I never travel alone unless it's highly traveled area. For one thing, if I get stuck after doing something stupid I'd rather get help from a buddy than a stranger.

My current supply kit:
Recovery strap (not tow strap)
2 shackles
Tire puncture repair kit
Silicone tape http://www.rescuetape.com/
Water
ATF and oil
Compressor (planning on getting the Costco one)
Flashlight
Leatherman
CB and sometimes GPRS
Rubber floormats

Go to the bookstore for offroading books and trail listings- they'll have good stuff for your area, plus you'll want to take it along with you anyway.

All good comments. I would add a first aid kit, snacks, hiking shoes, appropriate clothing and extra water. If you are mechanically inclined take a few spare parts like tie rods, pitman arm, half shafts, ball joints and the tools needed to replace them. You probably won't need the parts until you start wheelin a little harder. If you can't make the repairs don't bother with the parts and tools. If you do take rope and tie up your wife be sure to post the pics.

I agree with everyone here...a good recovery strap, a clevis or two, and a wheelin buddy are the best place to start! great point 3hummers, if you are stuck in the middle of nowhere you may get hungry or need some water...
I kinda like the idea of a CO2 tank, such as those by powertank http://www.powertank.com/
idk about driving on the beach, haven't done that yet, but i REEEEAAALLY wanna! :)

<snip>I can help you out with the air compressor. IMHO, the best 12V is the MasterFlow MF-1050. There's lots of places that sell them, but I got mine for a pretty good deal at Costco. Here's a really in-depth review some guy did on them:

-I agree 100%. The CostcoI go to no longer has them. I have seen the same compressor branded as "slime" at one of the major parts chains.

-How much air is generally let out of the tires go on the beach?

-The rule of thumb for airing down is to reduce the height of the sidewall by 25%. On most tires and most vehicles this will be somewhere under 10 PSI.

-Here on Long Island, NY we are required to also have a fire extinguisher in an off-road vehicle. Is there any particular kind everyone uses?

-I have a Kidde 2.5 lb mounted between the driver seat and the door.

-We also need rope. Anything special in that regard?

-If you want someting to pull a vehicle with, use a nylon recovery strap with loops on the ends. Use Clevis (shackles) to conect it to the vehicle. TSC (Tractor Supply) is a great place to pick theses up both for price and selection if you have one local.

-The salesman at the dealership was talking about off road places upstate and in the Poconos. Are those the best places around here?

- I know nothing about your area, butI know enough about the car busness to know not to put much faith in what a sales drone says. ;)

-Are there any good websites for the off road newbee?

-Yes
