Off-Road Lights: How to remove covers?
Hey guys,
I have a 2006 H2 with roof-mounted off-road spotlamps/lights. The person that had the vehicle before me left the caps/covers on the lights with the lights turn on. The covers now have melted places in them. I want to remove the covers and can't figure out ow to get them off. The owner's manual says to make sure to remove the covers before using the lights, so you would think that they just snap off, but I can't figure out how. Thanks for your help. |
First, never leave the covers on. They are useless. Dumb idea. Never put them on, since you do not need them on as they are too high to crack a lens from rock debris on the road. Everyone melts their covers...
You will have to pry them off your glass lenses. Spray WD40 or better yet Kroil in the space between plastic and glass, let soak in for a day, and take a screwdriver and start prying. You may crack some lenses if not careful, and will need to replace them. Not sure if they are available from GM, so you better check first so you know what your outcome could be.... Ours were melted when we bought the vehicle. Had dealer replace them. No problem. |
Yes it is illegal. These lights would blind the on coming cars making it hard for them to see the road. A car's headlights are precision engineered to project a beam pattern that avoids the angel towards the other driver's eyes. Believe it or not the same model of car that is made for england has different headlights than ones made for the US because they drive on the other side of the road.

First off they're talking about the roof mounted off road lights not the head lights! And yes in some US states it's Illegal to have forward facing lights above the the head lights while on public highways/roadways hence the FACTORY offroad light covers which he's trying to remove/replace. Which comes to point 2 regardless of how dumb it may be some states require covers on off road lights so they're not "USELESS" they save some people from getting pulled over & getting a ticket!!
