normal on the temp gage, new and updated for 2010

My guage reads between the average (halfway)mark and H for hot. I live in Houston, and yes, I do worry that it stays above what I think is the normal mark. Reading your post sets me a little more at ease.
yes siree bob its summer again and in the past it got hot as hexx, currently a cool 66 and raining in in. yesterday the official usa weather showed 80's and sun for today but that was over 16 hrs ago. so much for long range forcasts al.
in july 09 i got my first hummer,an 07 lux 37k miles, like new. drove it till sept of 10 and never saw the gage read up to mid point, just a tad below.
i got my 10 in sept 10 when there were 37 h3 left in new inventory. drove it 9000 miles since and never saw the gage up to mid point, just a tad below.
it seems they may stick there xcept some guys report higher readings.
of course we just endured the longest coldest algore winter since i wuz a kid over a half century ago.

so if u aint towin or stuck in traffic in dallas,it otta read about mid point, just a tad below

Usually all temp guages are divided in 4 parts...everything from the 4th line is too hot!
If your indicator goes towards the 3rd mark check if the clutch of the fan is engaged and the fan runs faster than normal...read also the manual.
A malfunction fan clutch can also be a reason for overheating.

My H3 goes frequently up to the 3rd mark. We have temps around 30-35 degrees celcius in summer and when I go up the hill to our top station (work at the Lantau cable car) the coolant gets good warm...

I would say that temps up to the 3rd mark are normal in hotter areas...

Exactly the same here in Lebanon..All winter temp was at halfway or lower..as soon as outside temp started to go over 28C, H3 temp started to climb over half , but never to 3/4...that is with the A/C on and uphill...straight freeway drives keeps the temp halfway..Nothing to be done about this in hotter climates...

.as soon as outside temp started to go over 28C, H3 temp started to climb over half
28c=80f? my 2 h3 never went above mid, even in 95+f temps and its not ambient temp that puts it at mid,its the thermostat.
it would run cooler without it. so the thermo keeps it stable and HOT for best performance.
if it goes above mid point in normal driving,id be looking for trouble. i think the thermo is 195 deg,so if the fan is working, at 95 ambient u should be "cool',,,unless ure stuck in traffic,,,in dallas!

My 07 normally runs just under 1/2 on the guage, even in 100 degree Texas summer heat. I don't do any stop and go driving so I can't tell you how that would be but until this summer when the anti-freeze mixture was less than 50/50 (somewhere closer to 100/0 due to a slow radiator leak) I never saw the guage go over 1/2. This time it went to 2/3 on the guage with the a/c on at 55 mph and 104 degrees outside. Cutting the a/c and getting back up to 70 on the interstate dropped it to just over half where it had been running all day. I'm currently replacing the radiator inbetween futzing on the internet (it's over a hunnerd again outside) and running out for special tools. I wonder how the guage will read with a new, clean, non-scaled up radiator?

Did a coolant flush a month ago and added http://www.royalpurple.com/productsi/purple-ice.png
my temps stay around the 1/4 mark in stop and go traffic @ a constant 80 degrees F here. Climbing hills takes me to the 1/2 mark but do notice that shutting down engine after the hill climb when restarting the temp is at just under 3/4.

drtom 07-08-2011 06:53 PM

when a 3.7 warms up it should stay at mid point. if you are below for an extended time you are not hot enuf. could be ts stuk open

HawaiianH3 07-08-2011 07:57 PM

Thanks for the heads up Drtom! Is that necessarily a bad thing to run to cold? I was thinking of pulling out the TS anyway, lots of folks do that on older vehicles here in HI due to not ever needing it.

drtom 07-08-2011 11:32 PM

if cold was good they'd leave out the thermo and run 2 fans. you could also redirect the aircond to really freeze the motor! no,hotter is better, thats why they use 195 thermostats, to keep the temp UP! when stable thats one less thing to mess with in the computer program.
im sure theres lots more to it but running cold kills engines, gotta be hot
