New Exhaust

I have been reading through all of the posts and see that I can't really go wrong with a Magnaflow or a Gibson, but I haven't ever done installs of exhaust systems. It then prompted me to call local exhaust guys and they all want to build the exhaust with using a magnaflow or gibson exhaust but they would do all the pipe work they would also do the stainless tips. I have gotten quotes from 325.00 - 450.00 using a magnflow exhaust and their pipes installed. My question is if these are exhaust speicialists is there a big difference between going with a shop and going with one of thee systems that are all in one? Thanks for the help.

Hello phusion! :) Good question/post. The answer is yes and no, I need your VOTE? :D What you need to understand is: some shops actually sell/install mfg kits, basically the same ones you or I buy on line...etc.. Others sell the same mfg MUFFLERS and maybe pipes/clamps, but fabricate the system. If you have some patience, and basic auto tools skill (I mean basic) you can buy and instal the kit cheaper than the local shop, almost always every time! If you can't/won't do it yourself, go to a good shop.

Doc thanks for the answer. The shops that I have spoken to would be using the MFG muffler and fabricating the system. I just didnt know if a system with them fabricating it would be better, worse, or no difference then the complete kits we buy online. Obviously I know some of that is going to depend on the shop, but they are quoting 325 - 450 installed while fabricating. I have some of the basic knowledge and have read on this awesome forum of how to do it and have all the tools needed. Time has always been more of a problem for me, but I always seem to make time for the truck. So I guess what I am wondering is do I buy a system online for 380-450 and spend a couple hours myself, or use a shop to use a MFG muffler and fabricate the pipes/clamps for less. My main concern is not the cost it is what will be the best option for the cost. Thansk for your help.

Good point Doc, I haven't fooled with an exhaust system in probably 25 years and I tackled removing my factory one piece by myself, then installed the Magnaflow dual exhaust by myself. Took maybe a half day total.

I purchased the Billy Boat exhaust system for my 06 H3 on line. Was going to install it myself and gave up after 2 hours of trying to get one of the hangers off of the existing exhaust. Rehung the ones that were taken off and drove to a shop to install it for me. My vote would be to select the best shop and have them do a good installation of a custom exhaust.

If you are going to cut up the stock exhaust anyway, you may want to try this. I had a local welding/muffler shop cut off the stock muffler and make a ~2 foot stainless steel pipe to extend the stock pipe out to the passinger side cutout. The stock resonator is still there to take the edges of the exhaust note. This cost me $30. I had the B&B exhaust and the tipsdiscolored big time. I could clean the tips up but in a month they were discolored again. The B&B muffler looked better than the tips. I had some inside resonance with the B&B and the modified stock system has way less resonance. The modified stock system flows pretty well and has a deep tone. I also had a straight 2.5 inch pipe from the cat back. The modified stock system seems to flow almost as good as the straight pipe.

For $30 it was worth a shot to me and I'm glad I did.

IF, if, you can get a quality stainless system, with a lifetime warranty, froma reputible local shop for less than $400.00, I would say do it. However, take a look at a previous system with some miles on it (they should be able to provide at least a reference) before you do. The kits have proven longevity and a nice warranty.

Thanks for responses guys. From waht I am reading we know the MFGs have done the exhaust right and I may be taking a chance if I go with an exhaust shop to fabricate one. For a couple of hours and $50 more I think I will ensure I have the proper setup. Thanks again.
