You guys are getting ripped. I'm 31, have full coverage through Allstate, and pay around $400 every six months. Have any of you tried Geico? I used them for my motorcycle insurance and they were about 75% cheaper then anybody else, plus their customer service is excellent.
Here in BC, we don't have a choice as far as auto insurance goes. ICBC is the Insurance Corp of BC (gov owned), and they is/are/be the only boys we can get car insurance from, so their price is the one we get to "choose". We can still get just basic coverage through them, and add on third party extras, but their base rate is the bulk of the expense, and the add on prices aren't that different from competition. On previous vehicles, my insurance did range from $800-$1200 per year. I also have new value replacement coverage with that though, which I don't usually get. This is all after my 45% discount.

Sounds like the Canadian Gov't is making out. Here in the states we call that highway robbery.

In this case it the provincial (state) gov. that is responsible for insurance and rates. It may seem high to you, but doesn't seem "terrible" to me (though I'd be quite happy to pay less). The average personal income in BC for 2006 was $46,000, so I'm not sure how that translates into relative amounts.

Do they give you a discount if you have to insurance more than one vehicle? Do you have to get your homeowner's insurance through the state gov as well?

No discount for more than 1 vehicle (due to lack of competition I'm sure). Automobile insurance is mandatory by law in BC, so nobody drives without it (instant $850 fine, and immediate vehicle impoundment if caught with no insurance) Homeowners is another thing entirely. Not required, and lots of options. BC auto insurance rates are considered to be some of the cheapest in Canada believe it or not. This whole thread is reminding me how much I hate insurance though!

I bet you Dairyland has better motorcycle insurance rates than Geico. You should give them a call.
You might wanna get ready to start shoppping when your bike insurance is due.. Dairyland has gone outta business..

My bike insurance just came up for renewal about a week ago. She's all paid up for the year. I don't know where you got your info because I just got off the phone with Dairyland. They aren't out of business. The parent insurance company for Dairyland is Sentry insurance.
