Installing Subwoofer and Amp

I just purchased a new subwoofer and 1000watt rms mono amp and wanted to hook it up to my 2006 Hummer H3 with the monsoon system package. However, after searching and reading through the old posts, I became confused as to whether or not all the speakers in the car are powered by the amp that came with the monsoon package in the back left panel of the trunk.

What should I do to install my new subwoofer and amp? Is it ok if I unplug the amp, or would unplugging it turn off all my door panel speakers and tweeters?

If unplugging the amp does turn off the speakers, should I just run my new subwoofer amp wire directly to the monsoon headunit and just disconnect my old monsoon sub? Could I just unplug the monsoon subwoofer from the monsoon amp?

Thanks in advance for your help!

BTW my sub and amp are as follow:
Image Dynamics iDMAX 12" Subwoofer
MTX Thunder Elite 1501D Mono Amp

Again, thanks alot!

RE: Installing Subwoofer and Amp

Power to all speakers come from the amp in the rear. The radio sends the audio signals via 8 wires to the amp, the amp in turn powers the seven speakers in the vehicle.
I would not suggest powering factory speakes with your new amp; chances are they will blow.
Other than that, I really have no idea how to install the amp. It can be done, but depends on the type of amp involved.

Just get a new head unit, and you can use EVERYTHING together!

RE: Installing Subwoofer and Amp

I have the products necessary to install a sub and amp.

Two small devices I bought and never used. Just took them to the basement the other day.

One is a device that hooks into the radio wiring harness and gives you a remote turn-on,..so your new sub amp will know when to go on and off.

The other is a glorified line lever converter,..that takes the signal to the factory sub and gives you a low-level RCA out.

I can get you the brand and part numbers later today,..and can sell you mine for 1/2 of what they cost.

Stuart.

Found them

The stuff you need to add an amp (if you want to retain the stock stereo) is by Soundgate.

Two products. One is a "GM Retained Accessory Power Device" (it taps into the GM data bus and makes up a remote turn-on leadto switch onyour amp). Soundgate part number "GMACC". Sells for $43.95

The other is a really high-grade, low noise, line level converter that will deal with the signals sent out by the amp. The factory amp has a class D or worse amp that runs a woofer that I believe is 1 ohm or less. Odd setup. Hard to get a clean signal. The Soundgate LOC4.2 is supposed to be the trick. Sells for $69.95

Total $114 plus shipping. I'd sell them both for $65 shipped.
