Am I missing the purpose of this thing, but isn't there a light in the dash to tell you when to shift?

It says it changes your shift point, does it actually change the gear ration in a virtual manner or is it like an alarm clock telling you when to shift?

I would say its more like an "alarm clock" that tells you when to change instead of a hacking hardware to upgrade your computer in your H3.
