Default Hummer Phone - Onstar

I would like to get some feedback regarding using the Onstar system as a cell phone. It seems like I remember reading about this somewhere. I think I read that if you have a Verison account then you can use your Onstar system as a phone.

Is this true?

Does is work well?

Do you have to pay for a Onstar account in order to use this feature?

I use it with Verizon. It costs me $9.99 a month extra as an additional line to my personal account. It pools minutes from your regular plan, just like an extra phone does. It's awsome to have it. You get hooked on it. In-Calling is free as a regular Verizon phone.

DILO2001gt - could you explain why? Sounds like your mind is made up.

Can you use any other carrier in conjunction with Onstar?

They have Verizon exclusivity. I'm in charge of my offices cell phones, and everybody is switching from Cingular to Verizon. At least in Chicago, Cingular service is horrible. Verizon phones work in elevators, under bridges, etc with no service cuts. You are lucky you don't loose a signal with Cingular opening up an umbrella. They are THAT bad here. Maybe in other areas they aren't, but I can tell you in Chicago, San Diego and Baltimore Verizon is leaps and bounds above Cingular.

I think it's great. Only problem is that I just signed a 2 year contract with Sprint and I don't think that they offer that plan as Verizon does. Also the minutes through ONSTAR are more expensive when used alone.

I think this is true for everyone else but when I got my H3, I got free onstar service for a year and 30 free minutes of the onstar phone. I never stored any numbers (because I knew I wouldn't have it for long) so it took onstar a lot of tries to comprehend the number I was trying to dial. But once I did get through, I absolutely loved it. Everything was really clear. You can turn the volume up through the stereo. I never got any "I can't hear you" or "what did you say?" For first time buyers you can get 100minutes for $14.99! But any minutes past that is a little too pricy for me. Unfortunately, Verizon around my area has really bad service so I won't be using the onstar phone anymore. Solution: get a phone with a good speaker phone! Ohh and the best part about it is when someone takes your car and then you can call them and kinda scare them.

Mine is just the opposite, I have not even once had a problem with it understanding a numer, now a stored nametag is a different matter. I can sit in my driveway with everything off and one day it will understand perfectly and then next day it acts like I'm speaking a different language. Other than that I love it. The quality of the sound is awesome! I've actually found the traffic report useful also

My experience too. Digit dialing is flawless now matter how fast I say the number but my system can get the voice tags confused. The interesting thing is that this is just the opposite of what I would have expected. It should perform best with tags saved in my own voice.

I'm wondering if GM has a software revision that improves this condition. Think I'll ask my dealer and OnStar.
