hummer for a family car
New to the forum..hello all..I'm looking at getting a 05/06 hummer to use as the family wagon. I have a expedition now that is a piece of junk, its in the shop more than on the road, so its time move on. I'm wanting to know about any major issues that I should look for before I buy. I need a reliable car for the family that wont be a money pit. I know you take the chance on any used car but any advice would be great..thanks for your advise
Buy one w low miles and get an ext warranty. Parts arent cheap. Case in point, one mirror =$700. they are pretty rock solid tho. Had mine for almost 2 months now and love it. Lots of room for the family and u can add the another seat in the 3rd row if needed.
I've had my 04 H2 for 4 years. As ColbyMH said parts are expensive but overall it's the best vehicle I have ever owned. There are 5 of us that regularly travel in it and we have plenty of room. In my opinion it is the best ride on the road. Good Luck and I hope you find the one you want.
We have had our 05 with 75k on it for 3 weeks and we love it, it didint come with any remotes when i bought it so i bought one and tried to program it and it wouldnt, turned out i had to replace the passenger door lock control module which was 160 bucks plus the remote. I also dont like the way the transmission feels, at 50mph or so it has some converter shudder. Luckly a good friend of mine is a transmission man. Gas mileage is 10-12mpg which is terriable but im fine with it untill i put a durmax in it and get 20-25
As mentioned before gas and parts will be your major expenses. The main reason I purchased my Hummer was the safety for my family on long road trips, the plus that its a 4x4 comes in great for snowy days. I have 2 other smaller cars for daily drivers but i use my Hummer often :-)
Because the Hummer was recently discontinued I ran into an issue looking for a new hood after i had an accident. Some parts may be hard to come by and you may have to wait a while to get them, but like all parts you can always find used ones somewhere.
If you are going on long trips with it I recommend getting a roof cargo carrier for luggage, it help having extra space because even though the hummer looks big the cargo space in the rear fills up quick.
Take care and enjoy the Hummer!

Thanks for the answers, I joined the forum today with the similar idea. I made the mistake of buying a BMW 745i before doing some forum research first. I love my Car, would NEVER get rid of it, but I learned (after the fact) of things to look out for. So, I plan on getting a H2 also for a toy, I would like to know of common problems that people have with this.
Gas mileage is no big deal, I have had many lifted trucks that had 10-12 so thats no shocker.
But what about the major ticket items, like tranny problems? Electrical gremlins? As far as pricing, I cant imagine any american made vehicle pricing to be more expensive than the BMW Stealership. $200 just for a f-ing oil change!! WTF!!
Again, thanks for any feedback provided.

I use mine as a commuter/grocery getter and love it. If a 500 dollar a month fuel bill doesn't scare you away then it will probably be a great family car for you. I love mine and use it for my daily commute and any family travel we do it's in the H2.
The H2 is not the best when it comes to gas mileage; however it is, in my personal opinion, a safe vehicle to operate. I have a 2003 with over 100,000 miles on it and it has never put me down on the road.
Like any other "large" vehicle there are going to be issues but you have to remember that a "Hummer" is expensive to maintain just like a BMW. Don't fool yourself in this department. I have had my share of "big dollar" repairs on this thing. It can also serve as a great family vehicle but just keep in mind the low miles per gallon on this beast.
Personally, I am satisfied and would purchase another one. You will have to make the decision that is best for you and your family.
