RE: How do you use 2WD?
AWD typically describes a car with a center differential (T Case) that allows the vehicle to be driven on dry pavement without damaging the drivetrain because all four wheels can turn at different speeds when turning etc... AWD is a little more complicated than 4WD because the center differential is essentially a series of clutches that distributes power to the front and rear other than just 50% each..... ie. the H3 is 60% rear, 40% front.
When you lock in the T Case, power then is evenly distributed to the front and rear 50% ea. and then acts like a 4WD T Case, locking the front to rear, and you should NOT drive on dry pavement with the T Case in lock. AWD cars do not have the ability to lock their center differential and do not have high and low gear ranges. Hummer has married the two to market to soccer moms, and off roaders at the same time. A simpler way to look at it, AWD cars, mini vans, etc. are not off road vehicles. While your wifes AWD van gets good traction on wet/slippery pavement, it is not going to do so hot climbing rocks, logs, going trough mud bogs, and climbing steep uneven terraine. |
