Hitch Mount Bike Carriers
Just bought a Thule hitch mount carrier for my mtn. bike and the back door will not open b/c the bottom of the spare tirejust hits the top of the lower upright bar. This is the model that allows the upper part of the rack to fold down, but the remaining "nub" is still too high for the lowest part of the spare.Anyone else have this problem or know of other alternatives that work?
Thanks! |
RE: Hitch Mount Bike Carriers
take it to a welder and have him modify it or if you have the equipment do it yourself.

I ran into the same problem so i went with the Thule rack and bike trays on top. I post a pic later.

RE: Hitch Mount Bike Carriers
I subsequently tried Yakima and had the same issue so I ended up with the Thule spare tire contraption. Its not what I wanted but will get the job done. Rack on the top is of course an option, but I don't have side rails yet so it would be hard to reach up there. Please post a pic though. Thanks

Seems like a good idea to me! Nice thinking!

Damn. Its too late. I have already opened, installed and used the spare tire rack. Figures that someone out there had a solution to this. Thanks though.

I have the Thule t2 xtr or something like that.. it folds up like you describe or lays flat to load the bikes. It also drops down towards you so you can open up a hatchback without hitting the bikes. Laying flat, the tire hits the latch handle. I have to drop it down towards me to get the tire to clear. I also got a longer piece of 2" tubing and drilled the necessary holes in it to replace the short one that came with it. I had to put that on there so it would clear the spare while folded upright. It sticks out kinda far but I got a spare tire mounted rack to put my daughter's bike on. Then mine and my girlfriends bikes go on the Thule...
