Default Help! My son pulled the rear hatch handle completely off!!

I have a 2006 H2. I am assuming because of the ice and snow the rear handle froze and my son broke the handle completely off trying to open it. The dealership says I need to replace the whole assembly not just the handle. I am a female but I am quite handy with diagrams and tools and welcome any advice on a cheaper way to fix this. I'm tired of putting the groceries in the back seat and the handle doesn't really match my kitchen decor. Thanks for any help.

Looks like it has to be the whole pocket sorry to say. GM Part Direct has it for $123.59 plus shipping, in black only no chrome for some reason

http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/catalog/

Got to agree with the "I have read the above and agree with GMPartsDirect.com catalog policy and wish to start catalog NOW!" to enter the sight.

Enter truck info then go to Liftgate, Exterior Trim, License Pocket, Black then "View Illustration" and it will be item number three.

Best of luck, Ed

Thank you Ed! I have black now (the tire covers it anyway) so that is no problem. The dealership quoted me over 200 dollars for the part so you saved me a bundle!! Much appreciated. Tiffany

Tiffany, The only problem/complaint about GM Parts Direct seems to be their shipping cost tends to be high so I hope total cost will still be less than the stealership.

Good luck, Ed

Okay, I am bored so I took some pics of the 2003 service manual rear liftgate removal info, hope it is useful to you even though yours is a 2006 and also anyone else that may come across this post.

Good Luck, Ed

Thank you so much Ed. If the shipping is less than 85 plus 25 dollars worth of gas to pick it up I'll be in great shape. Thanks for the service manual pics, you are a lifesaver!!
