H3 Transfer case rattling
I have an 06 H3. It recently started making a metal to metal rattling noise from undernerath. It only makes the noise while driving and barely giving the vehicle gas. Its almost a rythmn sound, meaning it is continuous and sounds as if it is definitely something that is in rotation. I replaced the front drive shaft because it had a little play in it but the noise is still there? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
im not getting the tie rod connection
you mention tr case but it doesnt sound for sure.
did u try 4hi,4hi lock,4 lo? any difference might help.
theres a lot of stuff rotating when you move!!
you should have checked with the driveshaft out, learn something.
lube ok?
in reverse?
turning?
were you driving in a lock mode and didnt notice? that stresses everything,tr case chain.

I had an issue with my 4 wheel drive fork in the transfer case which made my H3 not come out of 4 wheel drive. It is an 06. The fork actually breaks, which could make a noise as things turn. It may not be super easy to tell if your stuck in four wheel hi. The lights on the dash will not indicate the proper 4 wheel drive condition if this fork breaks. This is a known problem in 06 H3s. If you feel this is your issue, I have the fix. It's about $500, but better than a new transfer case.
That's possible Amanda, but I believe it's unlikely. Many mechanics would rather replace the whole unit than to open it up and fix only what is broken. I just joined this forum to get as much info on the plastic mode shift fork as I could find so that I would be better prepared to work on my sister in law's 2007 H3. Turns out her fork was indeed bad, and I am also going to replace the front output shaft drive sprocket bushing as it was pretty worn. Not counting the oil to service it when I'm done, I'll have about $35 in parts. I am a mechanic (airplanes), but I honestly don't think this fork replacement is all that difficult for an average shade tree mechanic. It's finding one who is willing to give it a go that's the hard part.
Good luck with your transfer case.
