Are the u-steps metal or plastic?

They are aluminum which makes it a pain to have them powdercoated. They have to be chemically stripped because typical media blasting will pit the aluminum. Luckily in Phx there are companies who chemically strip for dirt cheap and there's plenty of PC'ers available. I think I had about $150 into mine between the stripping and PC.
