I started off running the tow right after the performance but still had premium gas in there when I changed to tow. I then started filling with 87 with tow and could not tell much difference so heck, saving the difference over the next 20 years if I live that long will add up!
So I run tow with 87 octane here at about 350 above mean sea level. I have added some mid grade when going to the mountains when towing but that's it.
It was wet today and just for grins I gunched it hard at about 30mph and it lifts the front end a bit and breaks the front tires loose for about one revolution but the rear was still pulling.
It is a very noticeable difference the more you crank it up.
Now when I hit 14,000 plus on Pike's Peak with tow and 87 it was not a happy camper, but then neither was my fat ole self for lack of oxygen. I did not hang around up there long.
I was afraid to try to make changes just for the climb being unfamiliar with the thing so I just toughed it out. I think my H3 was torqued at me.

I personally run the Tow tune with 87 octane fuel. No noticable pinging or detonation. I don't really hammer on it because you don't need to with the improved throttle response and less downshifting on the highway.

If I was actually going to tow (5000lbs) with that setting I would be running the 93 octane!

Good to know, thank you. I was a little nervous loading the tune with 87 in the tank.

Hey Hunner, nice Whaler!

Here's my '85 Outrage 18 towed by my '09 Alpha.

I loaded the tow tune last night. I have 87 in the tank and did not hear any knocking, even under hard acceleration. The 3 definitely pull stronger, funny thing is that my muscle memory kept my foot in the same position as I used to for 65 mph... truck is moving at about 73 mph. Had to keep an eye on that where the speed limit is 35 since MD LOVES speed cameras and have them everywhere.

I do like this tune more- better mpg too.

I have been running the tow tune since my post above, last night I had to accelerate hard to pass and the engine was pinging very loud. This is the first time I heard it like that... I have heard some light pre-detonation in the past, but nothing to be concerned about or like this. BTW, the temp was 75, low humidity and 87 in the tank.

I changed the tune to the 87 setting but miss the Tow... any thoughts on why this happened? Is it possible to do a custom tune with the flashpaq that will get me close to the tow program without the knocking?

Any help/suggestions are welcome.

You might have just had a bad tank of gas too.

You can set up custom tunes but there are no "real" directions from Superchips on how to do it or what the "stock" parameters are to go up or down from.

I did mess with the custom tune transmission stuff a little bit but found the "pre-packaged tunes" to be smoother.

Do they have the Superchips Flashpaq for the 3.5L, V5? I am guessing they do not, being that they only have alpha s listed..
