Driving in the Sand.
 

- How does Everyone like Driving in the Sand? -
What about driving an H3 through sand dunes and variable deep sandy regions?
I visit South Padre Island Every year and my H3 (adventure) has taken me to places on that Island I have never seen and I loved it. but I have gotten in some very sticky situations where I nearly got stuck.
I keep my h3 on 4-hi Lock majority of the time, but i have been through some deep sandy passages where I was scared to leave it on 4-hi lock so switch it to 4-Low Lock. Thing is I never know when to leave it on 4 hi lock or 4 low lock when I'm in the deep sand that quickly changes to moderate sand then back to deep sand especially since you Don't know what's coming up ahead in terms of deepness especially since you have to go to neutral to make the change happen.

never been there,but, I don't think you need torque. low gear should be plenty good. low tire pressure I hear is important but you did that huh?

Been running sand for over 30 years in 4x4s, on two wheels more than 40. Can you say momentum? That is what it is all about.

In an H3 the equation is simple. Run 4HI Lock, TURN OFF Traction Contol and StabiliTrack. You want free wheel spin. Low is almost useless, do not bother.

Next, air down the tires. I usually run 12PSI in the front, 11PSI in the rear, if you have them over 15PSI, you are wasting a bunch of energy in transmission and motor heat. An H3 with proper tire inflation can go almost anywhere in sand.

so I usually am at 35psi on road, . . In sand I deflate down to 28psi. .. so I should drop the psi lower huh.

I have had 2 H3s. the first one was an 06 with the 5 cylinder. My current one is an 08 Alpha.
With the 06 I would run it in 4 low lock most of the time in the sand. Especially for climbing hills. It just didn't seem to have enough power in high.
Had to do a lot more manual shifting too.
With the 08 4 high seems to work the best. Turn off the traction control. This gives you all the power all the time.
I run my tire pressure 10 to 12 pounds.
The low air pressure idea works well in deep snow conditions too.
