Default Buying an H3.. Is there a year to avoid?

Been looking and looks like there are some low mileage 06's out there for a nice price.. Is there a particular reason?

Is there a year model that was plagued with problems?

I was focused on an 07' simply because that is plenty new for me.. I have no Jones' in my neighborhood lol.. With the prices I am finding 06's are creeping into the mix..

Try to get a 07 or later model. Ive heard that the 06 models had some head issues. These issues were fixed in the later models. The interior hasent really changed at all expect for the window controlls. My 08 hasent had any issues yet and hopefully it never will.

Good luck searching!

The '06 had a 3.5L engine, went to 3.7L in '07 and newer. I have never driven an '06 but have heard they are anemic in terms of pick up. Of course a lot of folks say the same about the 3.7L, but it's good enough for me.

Yeah i own an 06 and ive had MANY factory problems.. my h3 might just be a runt, but some of the problems included steering shafts that broke (without riding the truck hard at all) the cpu had to be completely replaced due to malfunctions, the onstar system was completely ****ed and for one whole year we had to listen to "phone unavailable" every startup (thanks dealership garage) and alot of other little things..

oh and every spring my h3 leaks water from the dome light.. ?

the computer thing happened with our 09 h3t though aswell..

avoid 06

My '06 needed the head replacement at about 15k miles under warranty. Since then it's been very reliable and we've just passed through the 95k mile mark.

Failures so far:

- Black paint wore through on radio buttons twice, warranty (wifey is a habitual button pusher)
- 4WD transfer case selector motor was replaced under warranty
- Heat shield bolts on manifold loosened up, warranty
- Sunroof drain tubes need cleaning twice a year (we park under a maple tree)
- Battery failed at 90k miles
- Original floormat wore through after 3 years (get the official H3 all-weather mat set!)
- One of the dome lamp door switches stopped working, warranty
- Parking brake cable buzzed against frame rail under driver's door, warranty
- Roof channel trim tabs cracked, warranty
- We're now on our first set of replacement tires (upgraded to 285 Duratracs)
- Just did the second front brake pad & rotor change

All together not a bad repair record. The thing that really impresses me though is how well the body and interior are holding up. We're pushing 5 years and the truck still looks brand new! Even the frame is still rust free except for surface rust on the nuts and bolts and we're in the North East salt belt. This fall I'll take care of that with a wire brush and black rustoleum rust converter paint.

If the price is right, I wouldn't be afraid of an '06 in good condition. If you are really interested in power, an Alpha is the only real solution anyway.

I will second the post on how anemic the 06 was compared to the 07's...I leased an 06 and now have an 07...the difference is very evident in ponies..
