Broken bolts on manifold for catalytic converter
The dealer told me I needed a new catalytic converter. Now at installation he tells me two bolts are broken requiring the removal of the manifold.
I was told it is a 12 hour job at a cost of $1900 bucks. That does not include the install of the new catalytic converter at an additional $1800. total $3700 I need a little help . . . are they off the wall or is this pretty close to the right cost. Thank you |
Haha... run do not walk.
The cat/manifold can be gotten for between 350 & 700 approximately the bolts can be extracted by a competent shop with proper tools. At say 85 per hour for a few hours to remove the broken studs and the installation of a manifold cat you should be in the 2k range or less. |
A dealer is the LAST place I would take my vehicle.
Go to a good independent mechanic for a reasonable cost. |

Thank you Did they break the bolts while attempting the replacement??? There are two Cats for an I5 H3, one mini in the Exhaust Manifold, and a full Cat in the mid pipe behind the manifold. If they are replacing the rear Cat, no reason to mess with the Manifold. |
