Default Bad Catalytic Converter?

Ok, so my H2's Check Engine light came on a few days ago so we took it to a mechanic and they said it Was a bad Catalytic converter and will cost us $2,000 to fix.
1. That price does not sound right to me, how about you Hummer Geniuses?
2. Could it be the Oxygen Sensor?
3. How long can I drive on a bad Catalytic Converter?
P.S. My H2 has 109,000 miles if that helps.

Thanks for reading.

Things to consider:

1. Do you smell rotten eggs or a chemical smell i.e. at the exhaust?
2. Do you have a loss of power or acceleration?
3. There was a recall on converters. Have you checked this out? Mine was changed for free and the technician mentioned that I saved $1500
4. $2000 seems too high
5. Do you have any fault codes?
6. Your mileage doesn't seem too high but it is possible.

Good luck!

2000 is not far fetched. A lot of front pipes with converters cost ridiculous amounts. Front pipe on a Ford Taurus has 3 converters and costs over $2000 just in parts. Labor another 300.

sounds like your better off looking for an aftermarket or cutting off the old one and cutting it open and bead blasting it clean. probalby still cheaper to weld it or have someone weld it back together

If you have a p0420 code it's a cat...$2000 sounds high...try eBay for a direct fit or performance cat...cheapest place I know to buy it...there is a place called ct converters that sells them too...good luck http://shop.mobileweb.ebay.com/searc...0&isNewKw=true

I'd still try changing the o2 sensor behind the cat just to make sure.

Default Exhaust

Okay, I have a 2007 H3, It is showing a code for bad CAT.
I am reading different things on the net.
So my question is how many CATS are under this thing, I see one right behind the manifold, looks to be part of it, with a o2 sensor in front and behind it and what looks like it could be a second one between it and the muffler. No sensors around it. I read that the second one is a resinator.
Any advice would be great!

135,000 miles. Replaced my cats recently. There are two of them. Had them replaced at a muffler shop for about $900 including parts and labor. My cat let go while I was towing through the mountains. My engine temp started spiking and when I pulled over I could hear what sounded like nuts and bolts rattling around in the engine. after crawling underneath I found the noise coming from the left side catalytic converter. I just pounded a hole in it to unplug it for the trip. Had to replace them after I got back in town. Never even got a code.
