RE: BACKSEAT MODIFICATION FOR CAMPING/STORAGE

We took out the 4 tie downs and made 4 triangleplates the same shape and size as the tie downsthat would fit in the whole so there was no making new holes. The legs ended up being 6 inches high and were welded to the tabs. Then welded angle iron 30 inches on the sides and welded angle iron across the front and the back that were about 42 inches. Welded to ball bearing door slides to the legs on the left and right. The top is a little under 3/4" plywood that fits on the metal angle iron frame work. We cut two peices the same size and notched them out to flush mount 3 standard door hinges so the wood would fold like a clam shell.

The original idea was to fold down the back seats and open the clam shell peice of wood but you end up with th ehinges in your back if you decided to sleep in the back so we opted to remove the clam shell wood when we wanted to use it, flip it over and that gave us a perfectly flat surface with no gap between the wood. Plus at 30" long when the top folded out it touched the roof so the corners would have needed to be cut off to clear the angles in the roof. We covered the sleep on side and the side that would rest on the back of the seats so it would not scuff the seats.

The drawer is 1/4 particle board in a standard drawer configuration and we carpeted the inside of the drawer with the same carpet as the clamshell top.

Two people fit comfortably (provided your a 5' 5" tall or under). Joe is 5'10" and it was tight. One person would have a ton of room. For a quickie overnight camping trip it would be great.

Do you have any idea how much weight that adds to your rig?

The frame is aluminum? With a center support you could get by with maybe 5/8" plywood? Particle board would be way to heavy. You have a good idea. I bet you could sell those on Ebay or even on this Forum.
