All Show and No Tow
Hello Everyone!
I have a stock black and chrome 2005 H2 SUT. I had a custom black and chrome 24 ft. enclosed trailer (5,000 lbs.)made to match theH2. I use the H2 and trailer for my business. However, the H2 does not tow the trailer very well. With even the slightest incline or small hill, the H2 "kicks down" and revs the rpms fast and hard. I amconcerned about blowing upthe drivetrain! I can not afford $4,000 - $7,000 for a new supercharger kit right now. Does anyone know of any towing techniques or used supercharger kits??????? |

How much wieght is the trailor filled with what you are towing? Have you ever put it on a scale to see if that is the actual trailor wieght? If you are pullinga large load up an incline, it's normal for the transmission to downshift, but if it's a small hill, it seems to me you might be towing more wieght then you thought.

Thanks for your input.I havetried a chip in my Ford F150. No real power gains, so I went to a Magnacharger supercharger kit. As to weight of the trailer, Iam only going by what the trailer shop said. I have an all aluminum frame, therefore it is suppose to be as light as possible. I have not tried to pull itloaded yet. Thanks for your comments.

What modifications do you have done to your hummer? Do you have alot of extra weight(sound system andmore chrome)? Supposedably a hummer can trailer a lot of weight.

RE: All Show and No Tow
the H2 is only rated to tow around 7500 lbs, and that's most likely based on a flat surface. i tow a 26' camper, and if i'm ever in overdrive, i must be going down hill. are you utilizing the tow/haul mode, or just towing in standard mode? either way, you've got a dinky 6.0 liter engine hauling a 6500 lb brick, with a 5000 lb brick connected to the back of it. it's not going to break any speed records. i prefer the downshift going up hills, it keeps the rpms up and allows the coolant to circulate a bit faster, since the H2 stock cooling system is such a POS. you could look into re-gearing it if you're going to be towing consistently, and that's your primary use for the H2. but, if you want something that will tow without knowing it's got a brick behind it, you'd be better off with a diesel, either a ford excursion (may lightning strike me dead for recommending a ford) or a dodge pick-em-up truck. the H2 may be many things, but a tow-beast it is not.

i actually owned one, a retired CHP mustang. it was a lot of fun, but it still feels wrong to go that route. . . .[>:]

Before I ordered the custom cargo trailer (built on a Continental cargo auto hauler aluminum frame) I asked what kind of tow vehicle to get. All the trailer shopsrecommended a Dodge turbo diesel as the best tow vehicle. However, industry experts (casino gaming) all recommended a "show and go" vehicle, withthe top choice being the H2.The H2 and matching trailer is impressive. However, afterits loaded, Iam going to have a very hard time driving up hill.
Now, I am looking for a Magnuson supercharger Radix kit. I was the high bid on anever installed kit, on ebaymotors recently, but someone with "bidders software" outbid me with only 6 secondsremaining in the auction. If I can not find a used kit soon, I willjust have to buy a new kit fromthe forumsponsor, G-Style Hummer Accessories. They appear tohave the lowest price. Thanks for everyones comments. |
RE: All Show and No Tow
Jake, did you get the kit yet?
|
RE: All Show and No Tow
Yes! I just won the exactkit I neededon Ebay Motors. The same auto dealer that hadthe auction for the kit that I lost, had another auction for another kit the following week. It is the Magnacharger Radix Eaton M112 Intercooled kit. It is suppose to be new, and never installed. Its missing the ECU programmer and the intercooler reservoir. I called Magnacharger and they will sell me both items fora very inexpensive price.
This will be my second Magnacharger kit and my third Eaton blower. In my experience, they are the best for towing and the Eaton blowers are very reliable. I will install the kit myself. I will provide updatesafter I install it.Wish me luck....I will need it![8D] |

Good luck with the install of the magnacharger.

Remaining parts arrived and I installed the kit several days ago.I still need to try it with the trailer. I will update when I do.Without the trailer, the H2 would kick down on hills. Now it does not kick down at all. Much more power. The Hummer feels "nimble" and more responsive. Its amazing how much more faster off the line that it is.Note the following:
Removing hoodand lowering front tire pressure provided betterengine bay access. Removing 6.0 vortech plastic intake manifold is suprisingly easy. Even though gas tank is plastic, its heavy and cumbersome even thoughfuel light was on-better to have 2 people remove it.Should use 2 people to lower supercharger/intake assembly on heads. For H2, kit manual nor online instructions did not apply when downloading supercharger program from Superchips Micro Tuner to H2. Magnacharger actually told me to use a PAPERCLIP to "jump" terminal b to d in a specificplug-in under the driver side dash....yeah, a paperclip! haha! However, it worked anddownloaded the program immediately and I did not need to remove fuses as manual stated. You will need a METAl holesaw drill bit to cut through the grill bracket tomount the heat exchanger and I had to drill it at an angle and it still worked. Read instructions carefully as there are different proceeduresfor 2003 and 2004-2007 models.Found it odd thatmy 2005 H2 Sut does not have an inline fuel filter (its in the gas tank). In comparison to my F150 supercharger install, the H2 was easier. Very well made kit. |

To answer your question, no, you don't need to remove the tire. If you don't have a ball mount that lowers the set-up below the tire and gives comfortable enough clearance, you can get an extended ball mount.
When we bought our travel trailer we got one that puts the ball behind the tire, but weighs a hefty 30 pounds of solid metal. It does the job with a 28 foot trailer and since we've driven it over 5000 miles, I can be pretty confident it hasn't screwed up my tongue weight rating. |
