Default 35 Inch Spare

I'm going bigger tires soon, and want to have a full size spare available if need be. Does anyone know how or have any ideas on how to make a 35 inch tire fit on the back of the H3 where the original spare goes? I've seen people do it, but I'm kinda stumped as to how they pulled it off.

Thanks!

You don't have to do anything!!?! I just lifted it up on the rack and bolted it down. It fits with room to spare. Have you tried it yet or just asking to get ready? Mine had no issues fitting...

Just like Slumlord said, a 35" spare will fit just fine without changing anything.

315/75R16 MTZ fits like a glove with no rubbing at all.

Tainter - how do those tires perform in the snow?

I have a 2nd complete set of OEM tires and wheels for my '08 LUX, and I want to turn them into a winter set (studless). Here in NYC we get about three to four 7" snow events a season, and usually two whoppers like the 32" storm of Christmas weekend. It's not much overall, but I would like a set of tires with more bite and patch than the OEM (my OEMs are stock 265/75 16s), to run from Thanksgiving to March.

Thanks,
Phil

I have the same tires as Tainter, except I went with 305s (same width as the 315s, but 33 instead of 35). They are siped from the factory, so when new they bite great, in your second season or so you may want to get them re-siped. The MTZ is an awesome tire and made in the USA. In snow, exceptional. On hard packed snow or ice, a more conservative tread is actually better. My truck came with the 33 Duelers, they actually are a better all weather tire for on road winter driving, but suck off road.

BTW this "will a 35 fit the H3 spare location?" has been through the forums about 787235 times.

Then maybe I just keep my 2nd set of stock wheels/tires and just add chains.

But those MTZs look so tasty....are they noisy on regular, street/highway driving? I don't off road (not much of that around NYC), but do need to get out in inclement weather.

Well if you are worried about noise, stay away from any M/T (Mud Terrain) Tire! Out of all the M/Ts I have had (and that's a lot) the MTZs are great at everything but not excellent at any one thing. Most tires are great at 1 or 2 things, that's why we have MTZs on both of our HUMMERS. One set ia at 60K and needs to be replaced (great tread wear for an M/T) the other is at 30k with about half tread. The secret to longer tread life is to have regular rotations and a lifetime alignment.

I agreee with DOC, after the first 20k on the MTZs needed to be siped again for winter use. Discount tire does this for only $10 per tire in our area.

I would keep a set of your OEM Duellers for the winter and run something "better looking" for the other seasons if you have the choice.
