Default Mudding and vent solenoid failure

Anyone else experience this? Is this a common problem? Seems that every time I go mudding, I have to replace a bad vent solenoid that gets stuck open because of mud. I wonder if I can cover it with something like a beer koozie or a microphone cover to keep the mud out. Or install a switch that keeps it closed when I go mudding. Granted, the part is about $30 (equal to 1/3 tank of gas). I could use that $30 to wash all the mud off my truck.
