Painting the front skid plate and impact bar
 

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has painted their front impact bar or skid plate. I attached a pic of the 2 aluminum plates showing the impact bar (1) and skid plate (2). I just painted the aluminum skid plate by lightly sanding it, applying Dupli-color primer coats, multiple top coats and clear coats. I think it turned out good. I now want to try the impact bar. However, it is painted and I'm wondering if painting over it will be durable or if I will have to strip off the paint to the bare aluminum.
Has anyone tried this?
I figured I would try this first and if it does not look good, I might just powder-coat it black.
Any thoughts are appreciated....

Scuff it w/ sand paper or scotch-brite and paint away.

To do it right you should really remove the (impact bar) nose, only the D ring bolts and 4 more holding the entire front bumper on. The center section is held in place with bolt fasteners into clips.

This is the inside of my 07 with the bolts and clips laying in the center grill section after removing it to paint it from a rock bash at R&V. You can play the tape it off game, but I doubt it will save any time.

Do you have a way of illustrating or pointing out what four bolts it takes to get this piece off in this fashion.

thanks Doc. yeah the reason i got into this project is because i got the lower grille off-road lights which required me to pull off the bumper portion. so right now i have the whole thing disassembled and have the impact bar up on hooks for painting. i already lightly sanded it, degreased and washed it. as of now, i have a couple coats of primer on and getting ready to paint the top-coats and clear coat.
the bolts that pulls it off were a little tricky but i got it without having to remove the wheel wells. ill get some pics of that and the 4 bolts for Deuce as i reassemble it. so far so good.... gotta git er done before it drops below 60 tonight....brb

now i remember where i saw this b4. it helped me remove the low grill w/o pulling anything else. those three bolts is where i mounted my 3 off road lites. i bought 2+2 at wally mart for 40 bucks tot and three nuts to fit those bolts. cheep simple job.

Did something similar with ours.....lightly sanded, degreased and buffed, then just clear coated. Wanted to keep the original look with more shine and easier to keep clean.

Nice one, looing good....let us know how it holds up... thinking of doing same as i have just cut into that for my winch mount, and thast black so maybe black it all and the small mesh and ? maybe grill too, undecided on the grill....:) may need to powder coat as it gets a sanding in the dunes every week as it is...lol...

I keep asking you guys with 08/09s to paint a WWII flying tiger set of teeth up there, but nobody will bite. :rolleyes:

I recently installed a chrome lower fascia grill with lights. I had to seemingly tear the whole front end off to get everything installed to my liking. I now see how easy you guys have got it to that point and just want to learn the quick way to touch up the discussed areas.
