P0420 code and I need to pass smog

Hello, two years ago my 08 H3 threw a P0430 code. I was naive and had the dealer replace the cat converter so I would pass my smog. One week later, the CEL went back on and it was a P0420 code. The dealer said I needed a new “right bank” cat converter. Nothing is wrong with my hummer. It’s running fine. Fast forward two years later, the code is still there and I need my car smogged again. I cleared the code and was told by the smog test operator that everything passed but I needed to reset the driving cycle. He told me to drive for 80 miles and come back. The problem is that after 49 miles the CEL comes back on with the P0420 code. What can I do? Thanks in advance.

You said you already replaced the cat converter. Have you tried replacing the O2 sensor?

P0430 refers to Bank 2 (passenger side). P0420 is Bank 1 (driver side). I assume you have an Alpha, right? If the dealer replaced one cat, the other now needs replacing.

Had that code come up 2 years ago. Went the cheap route and had a fouler installed (the spacer bolt thing, as someone posted above). That "tricks" the o2 sensor into reading cleaner air, as it "spaces" it back further away from the o2 hole. Kept the engine light off permanently. Had the same code come up for my other bank 2 sensor, and did the same there.

Lasted me over 2 years before the cats started to rattle a lot, meaning the internal parts were breaking down. I just had both replaced, and put new o2 sensors on without those foulers, and the code did not come back (as they are now both "efficient" cats).

FYI in the 2+ years that I had those spacers on, I noticed no difference in any performance or anything at all. Except that it kept my engine light off! Passed all emission tests too.
