Default Manual Transmission issue

My transmission (5-Speed Manual) has developed an annoying little habit of not going into first gear from neutral with the clutch out (foot not on it). So when I’m sitting at a red light with the truck not in gear and my foot off the clutch and the light turns green I cannot immediately shift into first [after pushing the clutch in]. I basically have to [push the clutch in and then] go to second then [while still holding the clutch in go] up to first. This used to be occasional but is not happening every time. Also second is now fighting me from time to time. If I leave my foot on the clutch [when in nuetral at the light (for example)] it’s no problem, but it can get tiring in the city or traffic to drive that way. I’ve got the truck going to the shop for a couple of things but I wanted to get some input from you all before I get the line from the dealer. I searched around but didn’t see anything similar. Anyone heard of this?

Mileage on the truck?

The "dealer" would be the last place I would take anything for work. As far as I am concerned, they are warranty or recall work only.

Have a reputable local trans specialist look at it.

Have you checked the fluid level in the clutch reservoir? As the clutch wears sometimes more fluid is needed, like brakes.

If the clutch has been bled properly then the throw-out bearing should have enough throw to decouple the eng/trans unless you have a habit of riding the clutch and wearing out the friction materials. The other option is that the synchros are worn and not assisting with matching gear speeds. However, it is not uncommon to have to shift from 2nd to 1st at a stop, especially when the gearbox is very cold. Try keeping your foot off the brake when going into gear so that the vehicle is free to move slightly as the synchro try to match up gear speeds. Also, avoid "speed shifting" and try to match engine speed to road speed when shifting to save wear on the synchros.

ONE POST for your question would do, please do not create duplicate threads or post your duplicate question in other threads.

I have a 2008 manual Australian model (built in South Africa) which had identical issues in not wanting to go into 1st gear after stopping at the lights.
Happened at about 40,000km and still under warranty.
Eventually they swapped over the gearbox for a new one as they couldn't work out what was wrong.
Was told mine was the third one in Australia to have the gearbox replaced, so obviously it had become a known issue.
By the way, manual gearboxes are a lot more popular in Australia, we like to be in control.

I had some trouble smoothly up shifting into third gear (07 H3) and the problem was less evident when the trans was warmed up.
I have increased my schedule of changing trans fluid to every 15,000 miles (24,000 Km)
That seems to have helped considerably.
Manual trans fluid can get thick over time and it can easily slow down the three cone synchronizers in these AISIN manual trans.

Hi,

I've got a 2008, w/the manual transmission.

Occasionally when I either up shift from 3rd to 4th, or down shift from 5th to 4th, I tend to encounter a little grinding.

I think it has to do w/4th and Reverse being so close to each other, that I am hitting up against the reverse gear when going into 4th.

I make every effort to hold my clutch in long enough before shifting gears.

I use to own another H3 w/the same powertrain, but it's been a while, so I don't remember.

Has anyone else encountered this.

Thanks.
