H3 temp gauge

Hi, my hummer is having an issue with its temp gauge, it stops working from time to time and has a mind of its own. We have been told by a hummer mechanic here in qld Australia that it's the thermostat. We have been quoted $540.00 to replace it lol. The Ac off message appears on the dash then the temp gauge stops reading. Any help would be great

Also even after a service the malfunction indicator light is on whilst driving, we have been told that if the fuel cap hasn't been put on tightly this can cause it. The engine sometimes runs rough and this malfunction light flashes.

Any help with my issues greatly appreciated

Yes it is. As far as that job goes, an I5 is an I5.
