Default First fill-up; 13.7 mpg

I just filled up for the first time, and, with a mix of city and highway, I got 13.7 mpg.
I know the gasmileage will improve as the miles roll by, but is 13.7 mpg about what everybody else experienced in the beginning?
TIA for any replies.

I just had my second fill-up, but this one is the first one I kept track of and calculated the mileage. I got about 12.69 MPG. Most of that was in town, checking out the light displays around town. And idling some while my H3's powerful heater melted the 1/4" of ice of the windows. I hope my MPG improves some.

My 2007 H3/Adventure Pkg with 33's, has NEVER gotten better than 14.7 MPG with mixed driving. It has done better with highway driving but I seldom go on trips with it.

We have an 06 adv/lux and we're getting just under 17 at the moment with the cold air. But we both drive at least 80% hiway and maybe 10% rural (no stoplights). I was seeing a best of 18.2 and a lowest 17.6 in warmer weather. Maybe better sometimes. Cold air needs more fuel tho.

I have a 2008 base model H3 with stock wheels & tires. For the first 500 miles mixed city/highway (30%/70%) I was getting approximately 16 MPG. These were SWAG MPG calculations done while at the pump.

Took a road trip from Houston to Dallas right after break-in and decided to track the mileage a bit closer. On the outbound leg I maintained an average speed of 60 MPH...or so. Started with a full tank and re-filled 256 miles later with 13.06 gallons of regular unleaded. This totaled 19.6 MPG. Not too shabby.

On the reurn trip I upped the average speed to about 75 MPH and there was a noticable difference in mileage. Drove 300 miles on 16.8 gallons for 17.85 MPG.

I hope your mileage improves. If you do a search there's quite a few mileage threads with suggestions.

Wait until your engine breaks in, give it a full 3000-5000 miles to really know your mpg. [/align]

That sounds like good advice. (At least I hope so!)

Until the new, giddy feeling wears off, I probably won't get an accurate picture of what kind of mileage I'll get with my routine driving. How long does this giddy feeling last?

My 2007 is now nearly 6 mos old...I'm still giddy (a little, on the inside).

I haven't checked mine lately, but my first tank I think came in under 14 mpg too. Now I have about 6000 miles and it "seems" to have gotten better. I think I'll check it today to get an idea...my seat-of-the-pants guess is something around 16mpg.

I have to admit-I'm disappointed with the fuel economy. Don't get me wrong-I didn't buy a Prius on purpose, but still...5 cylinders? I really hoped to get north of 18mpg and I just don't think that's the case-but I'll check so I have real evidence instead of my guessing!

Other than that...I really enjoy the H3. I think GM made a mistake by not putting the 4.2L inline 6 in that the TrailBlazer uses...as the 5 does work pretty hard. Although...again...I can say that mine seems to have gotten more "peppy" as it has broken in as well.

Good luck with it...you'll now start buying accessories at an alarming rate...

What sort of vehicle do you have?

Year, Model,..engine?

You're mileage will likely go up 1 to 2 tenths after it has broken in,..but no more.

If you have the new 2008 H3 Alpha,..that sounds about right You should expect about 13.8 - 14for the rest of it's life (if well maintained and you use a good gas with enough detergent in it like Shell or BP/Amoco).

If you have the I5 engine,..you should expect about 14.9 - 15.8 in mixed use depending on year.

I recorded the first 3 tanks of gas I used in my 2006 H3,..and got 15.63 over about the first 930 miles of the cars' life.

More recently at 17,000 or so I did that again,..and averaged 15.85 mpg.

On the highway at 50-55 it gets almost 20,....but at more normal speeds (75 ish) it gets about 17.

EPA estimates confirm this,...'06 H3 14 city,...18 highway,..16 combined.

For 2007,the 5 cyldrops slightly to 14 city, 18 highway, 15 combined.

and the '08 Alpha is estimated to get 13 city, 16 highway, and 14 combined.

So IF you have an Alpha,...you should expect to get 13.7,..and IF you have a newer5 cyl model,..expect to get 14.8.

With the exception on 1 trip where I was running at about 80 MPH, I have yet to have a fill-up where my average MPG's was less than 17.0.

By the wayt, the 80 MPH trip netted me a whopping 14.2.
