Default The Dreaded P0442 Code

Hi all,

Well, I havent been on this forum for awhile, but I'm getting stuck, and cant seem to find a cure to the "many" issues I currently have wit my 2008 H3

This one is driving me nuts. Keep getting "Gas Cap" reading on DIC menu, and check engine light comes on. I scan the code, and its P0442- small vacuum leak.

Ok, so I changed the gas cap......No, still getting the code. I checked the EVAP hoses for obvious leaks, or rubbing somewhere, no. I have not performed a smoke test yet, but is this the only way? Has anyone else run through this?
thanks in advance

You should have posted here before you blew $$ on a gas cap. In some time you will probably move on to the P0455 code (large vacuum leak) because your Evap Vent Valve Solenoid is stuck.

Per a find from citiboy, replace the valve with this. It will tell you it does not fit your H3, but it does, I just put one on my 07 Thursday before last.

Search vent valve solenoid. Might want to buy 2' of 5/8" heater hose from the local auto parts first, that OEM hose is a beetch to get off, mine eventually just broke I was pulling it so hard.

If you search around you will see that the vent valve solenoid, ACDelco 214-2149 , is the part that a whole bunch of us have used to fix the "fuel cap" code P0442 & P0455.

The only thing that is different about the ACDelco 214-2149 and the OEM H3 part on your truck is that the solenoid end (the pipe the hose fits on) has 3 ribs to hold the hose in place, and the new part has only one rib. I think other vehicles use a connector like on the canister end, ours just slides on. Make sure you slide the hose all the way on the new vent valve.

Remove canister and run hot water over the valve/hose connection, squeeze with pliers to break the nipple off the valve, remove piece from hose, then run hot water over the hose to install on new valve. Mount back on canister and mount back on truck. GL

Only needed for the revised part number it has a different connector, the 214-2147(discontinued, yet still available online) does not need the jumper.

The jumper is only for the revised valve to connect to the factory harness. Depending on when the revised valve was introduced, the factory harness should now have the proper connector, eliminating the jumper.
