Question Broken header bolt.

After trailing home from up north starting hearing an exhaust leak. I found the back cylinder front header bolt is broken off. Is this common and covered under warranty? Hummer H3 X with 55,000 miles. I was towing a 2 place enclosed snowmobile trailer.

Is the head of the bolt broke off or do you think it broke off part way down the stem?
Did you have any work done on it recently where the header would have been taken off?
The only situations I have run into this is when a head gasket job was finished and the mechanic torqued these bolts down too much and this is the result. I haven't run into a bolt just being broken off after all these miles with no work done. Call the dealer also to see if it is covered under your warranty.

Take it to the dealer. Should be covered under the 5/100K Powertrain Warranty. I have heard of this on a few I5s but not a ton of them.

Don't mention anything about how it broke. Just tell them you have an exhaust leak and that you think the exhaust manifold bolt is broken or the manifold is cracked.

Just the head broke off and I did have the tranny replaced about year and a half ago. I not sure if the header was touched. We'll see what the dealer says. If not i'll start soaking the bolts.. thanks..

I've seen a couple, and heard of many where an exhaust manifold bolt snaps off. Steel bolts anchored into Aluminum with a pretty fair amount of vibration can cause it.

If you plan on removing the exhaust manifold, plan on more broken bolts, they usually break at the deck surface. I would say you would be living right if you can remove the exhaust manifold from an I5 without breaking a single bolt.
