Default Wheel bearings bad.

I noticed that my tire was getting worn real bad on the out side of my front right tire on my 05 h2 with 42k miles. Jacked it up and it appears that my wheel bearing is bad. My wheel rocks back and forth. How hard is it to change?

It's not that hard if you are mechanically inclined. I did mine last week. getting the truck on a lift would be a great time saver but it can be done in your driveway. some quick instructions to see if its something you wanna get involved with..
-Remove wheel.. lug nuts (22mm)
- remove brake caliper hang out of way(2 bolts 18mm ).
-remove brake caliper mounting bracket (2 bolts 21mm) you will need a Good 1/2" breaker bar to get these off.
- remove rotor
-remove spindle nut (36mm)
- unplug abs wire to hub
- there are 4 bolts holding the hub assembly to the Spindle. (they are 15mm ) remove bolts
-if your Not putting new CV's in becareful and work the hub assembly off a little with your hands.if its stuck put a small block of wood on the CV shaft and hit it with a hammer (carefully)
you dont want to damage the splines on the CV if you are reusing them.
- once everything is removed check the rubber seal inside the spindle and replace if needed and clean the area.
- now just put it all back together....

If your taking everything apart i would put new CV axles in they are about $100 each at Napa your are probably fine but if you have it apart already....

During a my H2 check up, it appears my left front wheel bearing needs to be replaced, but the shop also told me that the control arm also needs to be replaced with it.

Do you need to replace both, and how do you know? Thanks!

Your control arm is ok you just need ball joints ... very cheap then getting a whole new upper or lower control arm they can be pressed in with ease.

Great, thank you for your response. I took my H2 for a second opinion, back to the dealership, and they said the same thing. The dealership was even cheaper than the local auto shop. Tried to give a non dealership a go.

But… yesterday, having my regular oil change and tire rotation at the dealership, they forgot to tighten up my right rear lug nuts, they were barley on by hand.

Long story short, drove several miles then pulled over, I knew something was wrong, towed back to dealership, they are taking care of all many repairs. Lucky the tire did not come off while I was driving or I was not on the interstate, I would not be typing this right now.

But now they can’t find my custom rim replacement, Weld Evo Velociti 8, it appears Weld went out of business a couple years ago. I take great care of my H2 and spent a lot of money to customize it exactly how I want it. If they or I can’t find one, they have to replace the entire set of four with something of the same $$$ correct? Rims are a set, you just don’t buy one, they should make this right.

The way I see it, they are getting off easy if they have to spend a couple grand on my replacement rims, this situation could have been so much worse, causing major human injury.

Will be searching all weekend for this rim, which they should be doing.

I realize this is an old post, but it had some great information for those replacing their front hubs/bearings. I took HMH2SUT's and my wife's advice once I removed the first wheel hub/bearing and replaced the CV axles too. Once it's apart, it's not much more work or $$$ to replace them as well. Total parts for me was $500 compared to the dealer's $1200 (parts & labor) just for the hub replacements ... probably $2,000+ if they did the CV axles too.

One additional piece of advice not mentioned in the original post is in order to completely remove the CV axles, unbolt and remove the sway bar end link.

Decided to revive this thread out of the others...

After getting new shocks, UCAs, traxda lift kit, tie rods, pitman arm, and kryptonite swaybar end links installed... the shop told me my REAR wheel bearings are bad and should be replaced.

Now I understand the front end wheel hub assembly which includes the bearings, but I'm having a hard time understand the rear... the only thing I can find in regards to the rear are just the bearings themselves (roughly 35$ each) is this all I need? is there not a hub assembly for the rear? I sure as heck can't find one if there is... but that seems odd!

I've already bought new front rotors and brakes so I figure I'm going to go ahead and buy some MOOG front hub assemblys and install those at the same time.

No, your rear end is a solid axle. You have to remove the "pumpkin cover" on most and unpin the gears. then remove the rear tires, calipers, brackets and rotors and slide out the rear axle shaft. then you can bring the axle half down to a parts store where they will press on new bearings and a seal.

Did mine last summer. Super easy. HMH2SUT nailed it on the nose. Spindle socket can be rented from part store for free. Took me about an hour to complete the job.
