Default Transfer case seal replacement

So dealer states the transfer case seal is leaking at tranny input, and is quoting a lot of money to replace the seal. Says it will take 8 hours! Hard to believe. Any thoughts on cost to replace the seal?

Your getting gouged. I think that estimate is crazy, back when I had my 07 Tahoe I pulled its xfer case, replaced a seal, re-installed and filled it. The total work time was under 4 hours and that was with a minimum amount of tools and having to wrestle the transfer case by myself with just a floor jack. Dealerships have lifts, specialized tools, transmission jacks and so on. No way should it take 8 hours. Talk to a service consultant at another dealership and ask them for an approx. work time and estimate.

You are correct. I spoke with my regular mechanic and he agreed, and his estimate is only a couple hours. I told the dealership to forget it. They weren't happy. Not sure yet they even actually took it apart to actually determine it was the TC seal and not the new tranny rear seal. If it actually is the later, they justvdidnt want to lose the money replacing it under warrenty (they installed it new in Jan). I'll know next week when my reg mech takes a look.

Why did the dealer replace the transmission? When they replaced the transmission was the transfer case leaking?

Prior to having vehicle towed to dealer, there were no leaks of any kind. Tranny wasn't shifting correctly. They stated at first it was due to bad primary fuse block which they replaced. Then they claimed the tranny electronics were bad so they replaced tranny with new unit. Drips of tranny fluid began within days after return.

Obviously, there was not a transfer case leak or they would have charged you to repair during transmission replacement. Did you share this information with the dealer?

Yes. Not one drip for 2 months prior to their work. Drips appeared in driveway within 36 hours after bringing it home. Suspect it took extra time because the oil drips onto the hazard plate first and has to drain off there.

Therefore the dealer caused the leak! Shlt happens when inept mechanics do the repair, and it should be repaired under warranty!

hello: my first post. Apologize if

I am not following protocol. Quick and easy question. I have a 2006 hummer H3. Waiting on a rebuild transfer case right now. I’m a little confused with the description of the parts. What is the torque spec of the transfer case collar to the transmission and transfer case to the caller, thank you
