Default Transfer case over full

Hello, this is my first post on this forum. Thanks in advance!
I have a 06 H2 with 94,000 miles. My problem stared within the last few weeks. While passing on the highway, the truck started dropping down a gear and back up 2 or 3 times during the pass. It doesn’t happen all the time but started to increase in frequency.

I checked the transmission fluid level and found it was low. Not registering on the dip stick. So I decided to change the fluid and filter. No problems there. So, I figured I would change the transfer case fluid as well. When I removed the FILL Plug, fluid started rushing out. By the time it stopped flowing from the FILL hole, two quarts had drained. I then drained the balance from the Drain hole which had another quart and a half.

Why would there be so much fluid in the transfer case? Could it be coming from the transmission? Do I have a serious problem?

I think your transfer case should have 1.5 quarts of fluid. The fill hole is not in the right spot for the H2. You'll need to top it off thru the speed sensor at the top of the transfer case.

Thanks for the response. How ever there is a bit of confusion.
Once two quarts drained from the fill hole, there was in fact the required 1 1/2 quarts still in the transfer case. I'm trying to figure out where the additional 2 quarts came from and what problems i may have.

I might note that since I posted, I filled TC with required 1 1/2 quarts and completed the trans filter and fluid change. Truck runs great now...however am i going to have this problem again?

Yes, it sounds like you're losing transmission fluid into your transfer case. There's a transmission cooler line that runs thru the transfer case. Do a search on here. There are a few threads on it.
