Default Tachometer reading low.

A couple of times now, I have noticed sitting at a stop light my tachometer will read below zero. When I drive, it seems to be about 1000 rpm low. This does not happen all the time. Seems if I leave the car, and start it up the next morning, it will be fine. Then all of a sudden, I notice it is reading 1000 rpm low again.

Engine seems to run fine....so I think it has to be either the tach itself or a signal sending unit or something... Anyone else experience this? And what is the solution? Having a tachometer is no big deal to me if the repair is not necessary or if it is expensive. But if there is a fairly easy fix. I would like to know if any forum members know.

Thanks Fellas! -Kirk.

I know there is a problem with the entire cluster. Might be a cluster problem starting to rear its ugly head. the only fix that I know of is to rebuild or replace the entire thing. Personally I'd wait to see if it gets worse. the tach thing I could live with .

Now my tach reads low 100% of the time. Any ideas? I may look into a cluster rebuild...but may just leave it if I don't feel like investing in an expensive fix. Thanks.

Fixed my tach by buying a new stepper motor on ebay and installing it. Total investment...about 2 hours...and $8 bucks!!!

X27 168 Stepper Motors for 03 06 Chevrolet Tahoe Avalanche Venture Cluster X1 | eBay

and by watching this video.

And this video tells you how to remove your cluster.

Works like a charm now!!!
