Default Sealant for Hummer H2 Rear License Plate Pocket

I am deep cleaning my H2. Pulled the rear tailgate apart to get all the dirt and dust out, and install some sound deadener. The license plate pocket has a flexible gasket / sealant around it from the factory to keep the water out. I would like to reapply new sealant to get a water tight fit. It is tacky, stretchy, and a bit sticky. It can be pulled and molded and is slathered around the handle to keep the water out. Anyone know what sealant GM used? Ideas?

sounds like butyl same stuff used to seal the door panels.
Amazon Amazon

my 03 did not have any sealant or gaskets. maybe they corrected something later in production or some one was chasing down a leak.

Maybe the sealant was added to later H2s... I know they come like this from the factory for the 06-09 H2s. This is what it looks like on the back...

I ran across this product from DAP called Seal N Peal Removable Caulk. Anyone have experience using it with any type of automotive trim? Appears to be safe on paint.

Yep I'd go with the Butyl... Or non hardening RTV Black sealant. Bu Butyl would be my first choice.

@bronxteck @Mark R - I picked this project back up, ordered some Butyl Tape and I can confirm that it is pretty close to the GM OEM gasket on the license plate pocket. I say "pretty close" as the butyl tape I ordered is more tacky than the GM OEM gasket which can be easily removed from the painted surface. Easily applied and confident it will keep the water out... not sure how easy it will be to remove!

That's good. To cold to do anything here in Joisey..... Need to take care of a off road lamp failure. two of my 4 stopped working .They are on separate circuits with relay activation from the stock Hi Beam switch. I'll have to wait till warm weather before I get into it. They are made by "PIAA" good stuff.
Sticky and Tacky is good for keeping water out. Should work fine.
