In this case then I'd suspect there is a bad connection somewhere. My guess is one of the multitude of grounds is corroded or loose and its is one of the engine ones.

This post has a PDF of all the schematics..... VERY good document to have as it gives you the details of the entire electrical system, wire colors, notes where things are, etc.

Below are the various chassis ground locations.

There are like 3 or 4 different ones that attach to the engine. I think two at the upper part of the back of the engine and one on each side towards the front of the block.
Forward one drivers side on the frame for forward lighting.
One behind the driver kick panel.
One behind the driver kick panel.
Frame under drivers door.
Under passenger seat on the floor.
About a foot up on the inside of the driver side B pillar.
About a foot up on the inside of the passenger side B pillar.
On both the driver and passenger side body mounts brackets that are welded to the frame (all four of them have grounds bolted to them).
Back wall on passenger side about midway up.

Excellent! I should have mentioned that myself as well. Test the alternator directly with a multimeter while it is running to see what it is really putting out or just swap it.
