Oil cooler help
Hey all I’m in a bit of a bind. I have a big trip coming up and switched to an aluminum radiator with electric fans. Problem is is does not have a built in oil cooler for the two stock lines. Anyone running an aftermarket cooler? Or have any suggestions on getting down to crunch time?!? Thanks!!!!
I gotchu. You don't really NEED an oil cooler unless you're towing heavy or offroading. Even then its not a necessity.
Dorman part number 99971 can be found at most auto parts stores and is a block off plate to loop the oil cooler ports.

I really wouldn't feel comfortable with a quick and dirty oil cooler solution for a long trip. If you want to add one you'll have to do some custom -an lines and try and find a cooler that will fit up front or underneath with an efan.

my entire trip will be on on an island all sand no paved roads. It’s going to be all off-roading. I have run a block off plate on my ls swapped car with no issues. It’s the off-roading part that has me worried
There's nothing bolt on aftermarket. It would have to be a custom solution. Honestly the easiest and cheapest solution would be to just get a radiator with the oil cooler built in.
I blocked my oiler cooler off several years ago, Have thought about ways to keep the oil cooler. I'm still thinking of the idea of adding a dual oil filter set-up and relocate the dual filter where its easy to change those filters and where they could get adequate airflow without them being in danger of debris hitting them, those would also allow an extra quart maybe more of oil to flow. Cannot stand where our oil filter is on the H2 with the 6.0. Had these dual filters on some muscle car builds back in the day.
Possibly this weekend. It's mounted with stainless nuts and bolts to the bottom of the piece directly under the radiator. I had the radiator out, getting ready to put the aluminum one in when I mounted the oil cooler.
I think I would second Gavin's accessment, the LQ4 doesn't really need the oil cooler. I had towed a number of times with both my 05 and 06 H2 and neither of them ever got warm enough to be a concern.
Now that's a little different with the 08/09, if your in that group the 6.2L does run a bit warmer but if your not towing anything heavy and the kind of person that changes your oil on the lower mileage side you should be ok.
The Derale cooler would be a good solution and should provide good results. Plus getting a possible failure point out the radiator is a real plus too! Myself, I would love getting both the Trans and oil cooler lines outside the radiator as well the failure of either one is a costly problem!
