normal lifespan of a H2 transmission? 75k? 100k?+

when does the transmission on a H2 (2004) typically crap out?

75k? 100k?

from what ive read, looks like exactly that range 75-100k.

What kind of costs will I be looking at if I need it replaced/rebuilt?

Looking at a nice looking 2004, has 75k miles on it. Tempted, but dont want to get hit with a massive $6k bill if the tranny blows within the first month driving the thing.

Thanks guys.

I hope you feel special. I joined this forum just to reply to your question.;) I was reading the other Hummer site and someone said that there is a person on e bay that sells refurbished GM transmissions and they swear buy him. If you do a search and cant find him let me know and i will try to post a link. The transmissions without core charge are one thousand dollars and less.

136K and counting

My 04 has 136K and counting. I've changed the fluid and filters every 30K-40K. Mostly highway driving very little towing. Its starting to slip when its shifting into overdrive. In the past, a little slippage prompts a fluid change and things seem to improve.

Now that I've posted this, I expect I won't get out of the parking lot today.:)

Funny, first I have heard of these GM transmissions crapping out. Seems the media (consumer reports etc) always picked on Dodge for transmission issues.

Hey, i know what u mean and are wondering about the transmission. I have an 04 H2 and replaced the transmission about 10 k miles ago when it was at around 115 k miles. The factory transmissions do have a bad rep. for going out and causing problems around the 100 k mark. The one i got put in wasnt the same one, its a newer more revised version that is supposvly stronger and more heavy duty and is just better all around. it cost just under 4 grand, 3980 i think to be exact. It feels really strong and smooth, dosent make much shifting noise eighter. My advice would not to get the original trans rebuilt but to go ahead and invest and get the newer , better one that will more than likley last the remainder of the truck, whick is as long as u want it too and take care of it in my opin. , but good luck man, and take care of that thing and itll be worth it, i love mine and there is no other car/truck on the road that compares to it, whether it be looks, value, capibility, power, reliablity and overall appeal.

Cmac04H2 08-14-2010 04:58 PM

your pretty lucky in my opinion to have gone 136 k miles on the orginal trans. I put a newer, stronger version of the transmission in mine about 10k miles ago, at 120k miles. They made a better transmission than the orginal one bc of the problems people were having around the 100k mark, and thats the one i have and would strongly recomend you get that one, its stronger, smoother and is guarenteed to be better than the orginal one. It cost me right at 4 grand for it , labor, tax and all. they say these motors will go nearly forever, ex. the 2500 hd trucks with the same 6 liter motor normally go upwards 250k -300k miles on the motor, Pulling and towing most of the time, but the transmission has always been the achielles heal of the H2. Id get it done soon before it causes smthin serious. Good luck

Sooo Need advice... Found a 2004 Hummer H2. It has 89k miles on it. Well taken care of and super nice. They are asking 19750.00. I am just worried about all the bad transmission talk that this transmission will go not long after I drive off the lot and from what I hear its very expensive to fix?????? Around how much????? Is this a good price for this Hummer? How many miles do these trucks usually last? I also heard they no longer make Hummer trucks so to get parts is very hard...Any advice will help. My email is jmd_1113@hotmail.com I have attached the link of the Hummer

I just traded my 2007 H3 in for a 2005 H2. The price of the H2 was 22000.00 but orginally they wanted 29000.00. It was a Hummer Dealership with 88,000 miles.

I read an article in the NY Times a few years ago that said the H2 is designed to last 300,000 miles.

But I have to tell you, this trannie talk has just blew me out of the water. Never heard the talk before from anyone.

Where is Ralph Nader when you need him? HEHE!

GMC took over production from General starting in 2005 and I remember reading about some changes in the trannie but have no idea if they really apply here and it was too long ago to recall specfics.

The one conversation I had recently with a Hummer mech said he would only own a 20005-2007.

Guess I should be saving for a tranny since I'm at 90k...

H2 Transmission

2004 hummer H2-150K miles. At least half of the miles were in the Georgia & NC mountains. A lot of heavy trailer pulling miles including the mountains.
My tranny just went out and would not shift out of Second. After GM dealer diagnosis I am told repair would probably be more costly than a brand new GM transmission. Never any problems before and I guess I should feel lucky compared to the experience of owners posting their displeasure.
Considering how hard and long I have run my H2 I can honestly say I am not displeased by the service of this transmission, just sad that I have to spend $4,000.00 for a new one and wish it could have gone another 100K w/o replacing.
:) Jimmy

193k

Was thinking about having my 03 tranny rebuilt for fear of roadside failure.
Seams I have been real fortunate to get this far on stock tranny. I have always run Amsoil ATF and changed every 30-50k thus maybe why she lived a longer life. And yes I tow everything from motorcycles to race car.

Cheers

Got mine at77000 miles. Now have 150000 miles. Changed trans fluid with synthetic only and filter every 30000 miles with no issues. You must keep up with the oil changes and don't forget the transfer case. SYNTHETIC. Know a friend who drove his transfer case into a pile of metal. No oil changes and probably went dry. They should last forever or close to it with synthetic Dextron.

Hey guys, old thread but i had to comment. I bought my H2 from the dealer in 2004 and put on every 275,000km and it's still going. Lots of boat and trailer towing, highway driving over mountain passes, and city driving too. Changed the tranny oil once several years ago and that's all there's been for maintenance. I was searching lifespan of these transmissions and was shocked to see them only lasting 100k miles (160k km)! I feel special :D

I have 280,000 on my H2 and the trans is now slipping and won't shift out of second. So what is the best option for this since I want to keep my truck. 1) Rebuild the stock trans, 2) Replace with another used trans 64K on it (one is available) or 3) Get a rebuilt? I tow a boat each summer but most of the driving miles are FWY to and from work. FYI I have never serviced the trans so I feel really fortunate that it went this long.

My trans lasted to 300K KM. It started slipping and wouldn't shift out of 2nd, like yours, so it won't be long before it goes...It got so bad one day that i barely got mine to the shop. I had it rebuilt with quality aftermarket parts and with a strong shift kit installed for $2500CDN total. I had it back in 2 days. I'm at 350K KM on the engine, so that is the next rebuild. i'm actually undecided on a rebuild or new.

Thanks for your reply, I got a quote yesterday for a Reman Trans and labor $2900 total. I am still debating buying a used trans for $1000 and doing it myself. I doens't seem to difficult, they told me it only takes a day to change out. Anybody tried to replace there transmission out there? I have done a few water pumps, starter, rear springs, shocks, fuel pump, plugs and brakes on the vehicle so I have some knowledge of whats there.

Update; at about 170K had to replace my tranny. I chose a 1400 USD rebuild from a local shop. Now at 240K it is still running strong. Although I have a pretty extensive preventative maintenance checklist. I still change my transmission oil regularly but I have heard that those with minimal maintenance trannys have a longer life due to the metal in the oil causing the frictions to grip better....
