you definitely need to clear out all the debris in the ring channels. vacuum or compressed air even if it's out of a can. worst case maybe an old toothbrush or wire brush

bronxteck & hummerz yes course. In fact I've already cleaned around the lock ring BUT disturbing generated more debris - Catch 22

Currently CADing up a removal tool which I'll make tomorrow,, little chance of getting one of here soon, thinks its quicker and cheaper to make one.

Hammer and a punch, screwdriver, chisel, steel rod, etc... just hit on all tabs, it will break free. Btw, no matter how good you clean the top, rust will still fall in,and by the looks of your supply line, rust is already inside the tank. Just clean the inside good.

You are likely going to need a new locking ring anyways. Just dont trash the tabs on the tank.... beat the snot out of it.

New fpm ring & seal, and secure the evap line, no pressure.

Yes I have all those, infact got more seals than I'll ever use, courtesy faulty ACD fpm's.

So after an overnight soak in penetrating oil and switching to a smaller hammer ("shock" rather than the force) the ring tapped off easy. As you say patience

The old fpm took some getting out, the OD of the pump matches the tank hole, so a little leverage was required

Think its impossible not to get rust inside the tank, I was very careful and used rags, brushes, vacuum etc, but with the rust from the ring and lugs it unavoidable.

I'm tempted to paint the lugs, the thickness of the paint won't be a problem, I've checked,

Work in progress!

No doubt there'll be a video...
