2005 Hummer H2 shift housing light (light for drive letters)
Hey folks. Going to start working on my new to me H2 this weekend. I don’t have any big money available yet so I thought I’d look at the small things I can do. Some of the interior lights are out. I want to do one of them right away. It’s the bulb in the shift light housing... while I’m at it I think I will convert to LED... this way I’m fixing and improving. And when I want to work on something I can do a light at a time and still feel like I’m getting somewhere. So anyway... can someone confirm that it’s a 194? And are there any special tricks I need to do? Or is it just plug and play. Ill look ip a YouTube video on removing the shifter bezel so I can see the light. I’m sure someone has done that. Thanks. Many more questions to come. |
I can confirm they are 194. Just replaced them about a year ago and have extras in the glove box. To get to them, keep your foot on the brake, shift into 1st gear, unscrew the shifter with an Allen wrench and pull up to remove it (bolt on front). Push down on the yellow stick and shift back into park. Use a pry tool and carefully pull up around the rim of the black cup holder section and it will separate from the gray console section (there are 3 snap in clips). Be careful not to let the metal clips fall inside the middle console as they're known to go flying when you install or uninstall the cup holder.

Converting to LED will only be "improving" if you get quality LED's. Cheapo eBay ones will not even last as long as regular 194 bulbs..... cheapo 194 LED's will start failing, flashing, etc usually within a year or so. There are two of them in there.

Thanks guys! Nice of you to help. If I shop on Amazon what is a quality name for the LED’s. I’ll order a few to get me started. If I get 194’s what are some of the common easy to get to bulbs? |
Enthusiasts (and what I've started buying) are all now getting ones from Diode Dynamics. They are top quality and warranted for 3 years. I'd imagine the name brand ones from the likes of Sylvania, GE, etc are also probably excellent. I have piles of generic Chinese ones that have failed me.

Yeah - they have a lot of options. lol
The SMD2 is actually closest to the brightness of OEM. A standard 194 bulb is around 25 lumens. HP3 about double, and HP5 nearly three times as bright. I have not gotten any for the H2 yet but I did use some on my GMC in the instrument cluster. I went with the HP3 ones as I was not wanting to blinded inside by my gauges. lol At some point this summer I'm going to tear into the H2 interior (new headliner, etc) and am planning on replacing a lot of the bulbs in it then. |
