Default 08-09 Rear Door Lock Replacement

My locks work part-time at most, so time to change them. Don't know if there's a step-by-step so decided to do one, as long as I didin't bust anything. I think there's 33 photos to follow.

<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9309_zpsiohmki3w.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9309_zpsiohmki3w.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9309_zpsiohmki3w.jpg"/></a>
Pop off the bolt access panel with a small common screwdriver
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9311_zpsrbrosad6.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9311_zpsrbrosad6.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9311_zpsrbrosad6.jpg"/></a>
Remove the two 10mm bolts
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9318_zpsugwcvuwf.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9318_zpsugwcvuwf.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9318_zpsugwcvuwf.jpg"/></a>
Remove the door handle access panel
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9319_zpsqwjdo69e.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9319_zpsqwjdo69e.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9319_zpsqwjdo69e.jpg"/></a>

<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9312_zpswnjpza1m.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9312_zpswnjpza1m.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9312_zpswnjpza1m.jpg"/></a>
Starting at the lower front corner, gently but firmly pull the door panel loose. It will pop as the fasteners come loose.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9313_zpszeqmtluk.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9313_zpszeqmtluk.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9313_zpszeqmtluk.jpg"/></a>
Grasp the panel by the cubby hole and firmly pull the panel loose from the rear of the door.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9314_zps5ys6bisu.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9314_zps5ys6bisu.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9314_zps5ys6bisu.jpg"/></a>
Gap in lower panel after popping loose.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9315_zpshfgtczgb.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9315_zpshfgtczgb.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9315_zpshfgtczgb.jpg"/></a>
Next, pop the rear upper door trim off, it's held by two clips.

Upper trim panel showing clips.

Clip slots in door.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9320_zpsjizctj3k.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9320_zpsjizctj3k.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9320_zpsjizctj3k.jpg"/></a>
To remove the door lock ****, use a small knife blade or screwdriver to pop the little plastic retainer out.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9321_zpsrzwbusbt.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9321_zpsrzwbusbt.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9321_zpsrzwbusbt.jpg"/></a>
With the retainer out the **** pulls straight off.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9322_zpsyvau4fyo.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9322_zpsyvau4fyo.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9322_zpsyvau4fyo.jpg"/></a>
Panel is now ready to come off. There are clips at both upper corners, plus two in the middle near the inside handle. The handle comes with the panel, it doesn't stay attached to the door like many installations do. I counted a total of nine clips, pic to follow.

Panel is now hanging by the door cable and electrical connections. I set it on a lawn chair to take the strain off everything. Here is the handle cable.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9324_zpswflmkxyx.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9324_zpswflmkxyx.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9324_zpswflmkxyx.jpg"/></a>
The cable is held in by two tabs that have to be squeezed in so the cable retainer can be pulled out.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9325_zpsivoespzo.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9325_zpsivoespzo.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9325_zpsivoespzo.jpg"/></a>
I used needle nose pliers to squeeze the tabs together...
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9326_zpsmzqf5ryg.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9326_zpsmzqf5ryg.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9326_zpsmzqf5ryg.jpg"/></a>
Pulled the retainer out...
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9327_zpsvmhqkjc0.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9327_zpsvmhqkjc0.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9327_zpsvmhqkjc0.jpg"/></a>
Pivoted it to align with the slot...
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9328_zpsdkmosxf4.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9328_zpsdkmosxf4.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9328_zpsdkmosxf4.jpg"/></a>
And pulled it free.

The door light. I used a small flat blade screwdriver the pry up the retaining tab then pulled the plug out...

and the plug for the power window switch. The release tab faces the front of the door.

Here is the removed door panel, showing the nine retaining clips. I hope.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9338_zps5w5xoxkb.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9338_zps5w5xoxkb.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9338_zps5w5xoxkb.jpg"/></a>
WIth the panel removed, here's what you see. You will need to peel the sound barrier from the the back of the door to get at the door lock mechanism.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9339_zpsjsupd0jl.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9339_zpsjsupd0jl.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9339_zpsjsupd0jl.jpg"/></a>
Here's a kinda crummy pic of the culprit: the lock motor.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9340_zpsqklon5vz.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9340_zpsqklon5vz.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9340_zpsqklon5vz.jpg"/></a>
Remove these two Torx T30 bolts...
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9342_zpsxrjrejld.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9342_zpsxrjrejld.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9342_zpsxrjrejld.jpg"/></a>
...and then figure out there's a third one hiding behind the door seal when the damn thing won't come out.

This clip holds the latch cable to the door, just squeeze the tabs together on the backside and pull it loose. Then pull the cable through the sound barrier material.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9344_zpse5qt8xsv.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9344_zpse5qt8xsv.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9344_zpse5qt8xsv.jpg"/></a>
Here is the rod that attaches the exterior handle to the door lock mechanism. You can see a retaining clip at the top of the rod. It should push free toward the outside of the door with finger pressure. If not, you can stick a common screwdriver or similar though one of the access holes in the inner door and push it free. It will swivel outward. Pull the rod rearward out of the retainer and the lock will drop free. Make a note of how the rod is routed, makes it easier when going back together. Trust me.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9345_zps4rivpn6a.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9345_zps4rivpn6a.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9345_zps4rivpn6a.jpg"/></a>
Here I've swiveled the retaining clip back so you can get a better idea what it looks like. Rod is already removed (duh).

Down to the last step. Use a small common screwdriver to pry the lock power plug retainer up.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9348_zpsuduyeaxe.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9348_zpsuduyeaxe.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9348_zpsuduyeaxe.jpg"/></a>
Plug is similar to those in the engine compartment: as the retainer comes out it causes the plug to lift free of the housing.. Again, note how the plug wiring is routed as you take it loose, definitely makes a diff going back together.

Well, you're halfway there. Installation is basically the reverse of the above, with the caveats about the exterior handle rod and the lock plug wire routing. When you stick the new lock in the door, plug the power in first, then route the exterior lock rod to the exterior handle retaining clip to make sure you've got everything in the right position. After that, reassembly goes quickly.

This was the left rear, I still have the right side to do tomorrow if the tropical storm lets me. If I run into any differences I'll post it up, but don't expect any. This was a fairly easy job for any average wrench. Enjoy.

A little further info. Did the right side this morning, only took about 45 minutes. Had two small issues. The upper door trim panel didn't want to come loose, I ended up using an old angled paint scraper I had to reach the clips and gently pry them out. Worked like a charm, here's the tool:
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9361_zpsdy7ssz6r.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9361_zpsdy7ssz6r.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9361_zpsdy7ssz6r.jpg"/></a>

Used this to pry against the panel to free it from the clips, worked pretty well, panel popped right off.

Here's a pic of the internal metal door brace that the exterior handle rod goes behind, between it and the rear of the door.
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9360_zpsvxt2pyzz.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9360_zpsvxt2pyzz.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9360_zpsvxt2pyzz.jpg"/></a>

And here's the routing of the power plug for the lock:
<a href="http://s1069.photobucket.com/user/flyday58/media/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9359_zpsfvzrz8yi.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u479/flyday58/H2%20Door%20Panel%20Removal/IMG_9359_zpsfvzrz8yi.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_9359_zpsfvzrz8yi.jpg"/></a>

The second issue was due to being wrong-handed, couldn't get enough squeeze pressure on the exterior lock rod retaining clip to get it to snap back in place. Was finally able to get my right hand in there and get it clipped back on. Sucks cos I'm actually left-handed.
