Starting Querk

So I have a 98 H1

occasionally when trying to start have to press the button down on Tom of the gear shift lever.

any ideas?

Could it be a safety interlock, which would prevent the engine from starting until the transmission is in Park? I think most vehicles have this.

maybe need to check the shifter cable / linkage for adjustment or worn bushings.
