Default Transmission problems, please help

I have a 2007 h3 adventure package,automatic tranny with 3.7.
drove home fro. Work night before last and it felt like it was going in and out of over drive, got up yesterday and drove to store it felt like it was jumping in and out of gear. A check engine light came on then it would just not go no matter how hard I pushed the gas pedal. But I could **** it off and restart and it would go into gear bit only for minute or less. I heard something about some type of selinoid but I'm a cop I have 0 mechanical skills

How many miles on it?

Have you checked the fluid level, is it dark brown or red, does it stink like burnt? When was the last time the trans fluid and filter were changed?

If you drove it and stomped on the pedal with extremely low fluid level, that would not be good.

Your symptoms are consistent with a trans that is toast and will need a rebuild.

I didn't think a transmission would just go out like that, but I'm not a mechanic
