Default Hmmwv cummins conversion/swap

Hi guys.
This is my first post here, I have done a bunch of research on this subject but want a little more clarification before I start making parts. I just bought a 1987 hmmwv from a auction and trying to do a very simple budget build. I have the hmmwv all striped down to the frame and ready to accept a 1996 12v that I had bought. I have a engineering/fabrication shop where I am building it so. My question is, where to mount the new engine and how high/low from the original mounting from the 6.2. I plan on making all new body mounts adding an additional 3" of body lift. Do you guys that have conversions have any pictures of the mounts in relation to the original hmmwv mounts and how close do you have that front drive shaft to the oil pan.

I am doing the same project currently. It also started out as a budget build but the $ adds up quick. I used the same mounting location from the 6.2 and made custom engine mounts to fit to the existing 6.2 bolt on frame mounts. My oil pan is so close that I put a hole in it... I am going to have to weld in a clearance piece to notch the pan to clear the front drive shaft, I only did a 2" lift though. There is not much room left that is for sure but I should be driving this summer!

If you guys are in the thick of this swap and have questions, call me - 303 748 6960 - It is so much faster to swap pics and info with the old smartphone than this forum. I've had the cummins in mine for 3ish years now with no motor issues, just hummer issues. You'll gain a lot of them with the new hp.

I will see if I can take some pictures this afternoon. Like FSR7 I also went with the 5 speed manual nv4500. I haven't started on the petal mod yet. I am using a 241 transfercase. My biggest question mark is how I am going to run the exhaust from the passengerside to the driverside.

I don't remember hanging the pedal being much of an issue - the shift linkage out of the 4500 sucks, as the tranny tower is a good 18 inches from a convenient place for the shifter. I was originally going to dream up some linkage system involving heims and pivot points, but ended up just bending a metal rod to where I wanted it - the shift pattern isn't perfect, but its worked. With the amount of room you need between the shift tower and the floor there, you have plenty of room to rout the exhaust next to that shift tower over the transmission, so it stays nice and tucked away. The low clearance item becomes the oil pan of the cummins - even with all my lift I've bashed that on some stuff.

Thanks guys, this helps a ton. I have my parts down on the laser now for cutting and will put some picks up by the end of the week. I am trying to retain the cummins motor mounts. Fsr7, I might be calling you later this week.

On another note, I also fabbed my own motor mounts and used the 241 tcase - and was able to use the factory front driveshaft. Just remember as you build the mounts that the factory drivetrain in the H1's is mounted off camber - the engine faces the passenger side of the vehicle slightly, to allow the tcase to sit on the driver side away from the gas tank.
