H1 Tires

Howdy,

Just trying to get an idea of tires people are using and how they like them on their H1's.

Personally, I recently bought a set of the military OZ wranglers from Used Tire World and really like them. Yeah, they make a little noise but ride soft and are very durable. Besides, they were not expensive at all and the seller was very reasonable on shipping.

Anyone else have opinions on tires?

RE: H1 Tires

I am running Goodyear MTRs on 2 of mine and Goodyear GSAs on the slantback. The GSA's are a good street tire so they work fine on the slantback. They do seem to cup quickly if you don't keep them rotated. Very quiet tire.
The MTRs are more aggressive and louder but do a nice job offroad.

I had some of the Military Oz tires on the 97 for awhile but changed to a 17" tire and wheel because the 16.5s were getting harder to find and the selection had gotten pretty narrow.

Sounds like you'd know if you're putting tires on that many H1's. I didn't care for the GSA's

What about CTI with wheel change?

MTRs, IROCs are probably the best all around tires.... good for just about any type of off-roading.... BFG All Terrains are good in sand and snow, but not great on Rock or Mud.... the old Military 36" tires are horible, as they are bias ply and never true.... the goodyear MTs are not a favorite pick of mine either.... Swampers are good, but don't last on-road at all (10k miles or so).

As for wheels, if you go aftermarket, stick with wheels built for HUMMER as they will have the correct rim width.... Cepek wheels are a great option if you don't want to go factory.... another option is to take a set of H2 wheels and modify them to work.... you can do that or you can buy them from Kascar......

I have run two sets of both M/T and Super Swamper SSR. The SSR's life was more than double the M/T.

I had no issues with my california gold wheels and CTIS. When the suspension is fully compressed the off-set of the wheels has the outer tread rub on the outside of the hood. Otherwise no issues.

There are a number of aftermarket and OEM wheel options that accomodate the CTIS system. Phazer mentioned Cepek makes a wheel specifically for the H1 and accomodates the CTIS. It will also have the correct offset.

Question for you guys.

I see lot of H1 OEM 16.5 wheels for pretty decent price. I keep reading that the surplus HMMVVW 16.5 tires on ebay are extremely heavy. What are hte normal weight of a 37x16.5 tire on the OEM Civilian H1 vs the Humvee?

I have 20s and 37s and want to get rid of them.

The tires themselves aren't that heavy. Most of the 16.5" tires sold surplus come on steel wheels with run flats in them. I forget the weight but somewhere in the vicinity of 140#s.

I understand now! Thanks for the clarification.

I have a chance to pick up some used cepek - this was debating weight

MTR's are great off road, good on road great in snow or mud but SUCK on icy roads. A hippo on roller skates.
