Hey guys I dont post alot on here but I have a quick question. My alternator is on its way out and I just ordered a new one. From what I can see it looks like its going to be a pain to take out and put back in. Anyone have any tips or a DIY? Thanks for the help.

 

It is a PITA on the I5!

You have to remove the Driver side wheel, inner fender well, AND remove the A/C compressor (recover the refrigerant), install the new alternator and repeat the process backwards. I think GM techs get 6-8 hours of tech time to do one!

Doc Olds, I think replaced one not to long ago. Hope he chimes in here.

 

Yeah thats what I was thinking just from looking at it. Looks like I will have fun Monday morning.....

 

?,no way to avoid the air thing?? wow a shame

I'll take pictures as I go. I might do a DIY thread on it. I'm going to try a few things and see if they work.

 

this is another"last year "topic.i remember someone,prob me saying id cut out a chunk of fender if it would prevent the air plumbing mess.

i sure want to see what u do,,,find that so far makes it sound like the air must go to get at it.
yrs back "the book"said i had to pull an axel to do a probe alternator,,,i wiggled it out,,and back in wo the axel job, tight fit but did it.

id rather pull a lot of other stuff than open the air hoses , even the rad.

I'll be pulling it tonight. I'm tossing around a few ideas that might work. I'll start a new thread when I start on it.

 

That would be a good idea. At some point we all might have to go through this

 

Hey guys I got the alternator off in alittle over an hour from the top!!!! I'm going to start a DIY thread.
