Default Chips

What are these chips I see advertised that supposedly improve power and gas mileage ? Do they really work, is one brand better than another, and how difficult are they to install ?

Don't know which "chips" you are referring to, but the stuff on ebay etc. is garbage.

Chips are for kids, get a PCM Tune. Search it.

Default Chip's

Since I'm new to H2's (06 sut ) what is a PCM tune? My posted question regarding Chips I see advertised as improving horsepower and gas mileage, brought responses from past posts going back to 2007. With all the technological advances since then are there any chips available today that really do improve performance?
One member suggested getting a PCM tune rather than buying a chip . Any suggestions?
Sorry, but I don't know what a PCM is.

Chips are usually just a resistor which tricks your rig into thinking the air is colder than it really is which adds fuel as it thinks the air is more dense. Tunes cost hundreds of dollars but they change virtually any and every aspect you can think of. You can buy a box tune or have a tune personally done with everything you want changed.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like if I don't install a chip, but add a cold air intake, get rid of the cat. converter, add a Magnaflow exhaust system, I'll boost my hp and gas mileage.

Not necessarily. You would still need a proper tune to maximize those add ons. The onboard computer will compensate for most aftermarket accessories unless it is programmed to use them correctly.

Plenty of hand held tuners available for the 06 H2. Do some research and find the right one for your mods and application.

While this is a somewhat old thread that got bumped I'll also chime in to point out that our H2's already have a cold air intake from the factory. They have a very large high flow air filter and pull the air from inside the fender. Many of the cheapest cold air kits will actually give you hotter air as they will pull a lot of the air from under the hood instead. About the only thing that really helps along those lines is the main air tube itself from the filter box to the intake. Even those really only will add maybe a couple of horsepower but they do look better, flow is smoother and without the baffling does increase the sound a little bit.
