Where did this test originate? Is this the scientific way of testing it, or just something that is the unsaid way of doing it?

OK You've convinced me. You should know by now I'm a big skeptic of things unless I see it or do it for myself ;-)

SO, IF Amsoil is so great, why aren't you or anybody else using it? NO I'm not trying to be a smartass, I'm just curious. I have honestly never heard of the stuff until you guys started talking about it in this thread.

And on that note, I see my Valvoline SynPower is up there with Amsoil and Castrol, so now I know I wasn't dreaming when I was using that stuff and noticed a difference.

Here is a blurb from Amsoil's store:

AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-30 Motor Oil is recommended for extended drain intervals in unmodified(1), mechanically sound(2) gasoline fueled vehicles as follows:

• Normal Service(3) – Up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

• Severe Service(4) – Up to 15,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

25,000 miles or 1 year? Are they seriously saying that it's possible one oil change can last up to 25000 miles?

I would use Amsoil if:

1. it wasn't so damn expensive ($6.00/qt HERE)

2. it was easy to get....it's sold by an Amsoil agent and they are hard to find...You kinda need to be in the clique.

Amsoil has been around for 25 or 30 years...It is the best stuff out there...Castrol Syntec is the next best thing IMO.

I guess that's why I have never heard of it. I guess since there isn't going to be a major difference between that and Castrol, that makes sense. See, THIS is why I ask so many questions. I like learning these things if they are going to benefit me. You may have converted me to Castrol. You can buy that stuff everywhere. Now, On to which OIL filter is the best [:D]

And as always I enjoy very much sharing with you and others the years of my experiences..It's not for brag, but just to make sure that if I do one thing and that is to pass along the best information to the best of my knowledge...Maybe that's why I've been an instructor of engineering for 14 years..I like teaching..[:D]

My best recommendation for oil filters would be to stay with the OEM filter ACDelco PF-61..And thereason would be if it fouls up and ruins the engine it's for sure on GM dime...you get my meaning?[;)]

I change my oil every 5K..so regardless of the filter and oil brand, it's gonna get changed.

And it looks like the filter is only $4.99 on carparts.com, which apparently is now JCWhitney. Interesting. I wonder if carparts.com was owned by them the entire time.

I can't understand how a K&N or any other oil filter can actually increase engine performance. It's just a matter of how well it filters the contaminents correct?

Wasn't JC Whitney and Warshowski's right across the street from each other In Chicago? and JC was the catalog business and Warshowski's was the walk-in retail side of it?

And you are quite correct..the OIL filter only filters..if it keeps the oil clean, it will help in preventing engine wear, not performance.

Yup now YOU are right. Warshowski's and JC Whitney are/were the same company. They went through the official name change when they started their catalog business more nationally. Their pickup facility was a joke. It was like walking up to those carnival horse race water gun games. Everything was dropped from a conveyer belt about ten feet up that ran down at a 45 degree angle. It kinda just plopped in front of you at the counter. It was pretty funny actually. It wasn't a store as much as it was just a catalog order pickup facility. That was to this day the dirtiest retail place I have ever been and that was when I was 18.

Once they grew really large, they moved their facility to the suburbs, about 2 hours southwest of Chicago. It's a HUGE building. I have driven there to pick things up before.

I used a Mobil 1 filter on one of my cars a few years back. Every time I started the engine, I would get a lot of valve chatter.
I changed it back to the stock filter and problem went away.

That led me to believe that it was restricting the flow, so I started to check out other filters.

I cut a few top brands apart in the middle to look at the filter. Here is what I found out.

AC Delco - Good filter, a lot of pleats, top and bottom of filter paper is metal. And good construction.

Motorcraft - Looked as good, if not better than AC. Also had support in the middle to make it stronger,

Fram - I will never buy another fram filter. It had less filtering paper, less pleats, and the top and bottom of the filtering paper was cardboard! There was nothing to keep the filter sturdy. To me, that meant that the filter would collapse relatively easy and oil flow would kick in to bypass mode and never get filtered.

STP - Good filter, about the same as AC

Bosh – Same quality as AC of Motorcraft. Looked well constructed.

Mobil 1 - Looked well built with a lot of filtering paper. (twice as much as any other). So it does filter better if it lets the oil through.

These are the only filters I did. I could not believe the fram filter.
And yes, I used the same application for all filters.

Agreed, FRAM is garbage..The best filter I've found, but I won't use it for reasons I mentioned above..is the WIX brand filters..

DAMN No wonder I had all that valve noise on my Rodeo when I switched to FRAM filters. DOH! That explains alot. I thought it was just getting high in miles and that was normal. You guys rock. I need to start taking apart magnets and see what really works and what doesn't by molecularly modifying my quarks with biochemical additives ;-)
